Honto-ji is the head temple of the Nichiren sect, located in Hiraga, Matsudo City, Chiba Prefecture. Often referred to as the "Hydrangea Temple," it is famous for its gardens and natural scenery that change beautifully with each season. As a significant center for Nichiren Buddhism, it has long been a place of deep faith and spiritual connection for the local community and pilgrims. The temple grounds are filled with seasonal flowers, offering a different, breathtaking expression depending on when you visit.
Honto-ji preserves the long-standing traditions of the Nichiren sect and has served as a spiritual cornerstone for the region throughout its history. The greatest appeal of Honto-ji is its ever-changing natural landscape. The temple becomes particularly crowded and beautiful during the hydrangea season in early summer and the autumn foliage season. Additionally, the tradition of making prayers using wooden tablets (kifuda) is a significant element of the spiritual experience here.
Honto-ji offers a completely different atmosphere depending on the season. From May to June, the hydrangeas—the source of the temple's nickname—are in full bloom. The autumn season is also a spectacular time when the grounds are bathed in vibrant colors. The temple is open from 5:00 AM to 5:00 PM (last entry at 4:30 PM). Visiting in the early morning allows you to experience the profound stillness of the temple, while the daytime offers a bright, scenic atmosphere. Please note that for periods involving paid rituals or special viewing, the specific time is 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM.
Visitors can participate in various traditional Japanese prayers and rituals. These range from general blessings for family safety, academic success, and traffic safety to special prayers for easy childbirth and Shichi-Go-San (celebrating children's growth). The temple also hosts cultural activities such as yoga and calligraphy, providing a unique opportunity to touch upon Japanese spirituality and lifestyle in a serene environment.
Honto-ji is located in the Hiraga area of Matsudo, Chiba. The surrounding neighborhood is a peaceful residential area where you can enjoy a stroll while observing the daily life of Japanese locals. It is easily accessible from urban areas, being within walking distance from Kita-Kogane Station on the JR Joban Line.
When visiting a temple, it is customary to wear modest, respectful clothing. As the grounds may have uneven paths or gravel, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. Please note that cash is required for purchasing wooden tablets (kifuda) or making offerings for prayers. English language support is limited, so it is helpful to check information in advance. When photographing, please follow the temple's rules, as photography is often restricted during active rituals or prayers.
