Homei Shijuhatchitaki is a stunning natural scenic spot located in Aoba Ward, Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture, where numerous waterfalls of various sizes cascade one after another. Situated near the Seiko Bridge along Route 48 in the upper reaches of the Hirose River, the site is famous for its unique acoustic quality. The name 'Homei' refers to the beautiful sound of the falling water, which is said to resemble the cry of the legendary 'Houou' (the mythical Phoenix). The sight of multiple waterfalls flowing down a staircase-like formation through dense, lush forests is a true masterpiece of nature.
This area was once known as 'Bomeki no Taki.' The name 'Shijuhatchitaki' (meaning 48 waterfalls) has been used since the Edo period, referring to the total number of falls including the tributaries in the upper reaches. Local legends also tell of a celestial maiden (Tennyo) who descended to this land to perform a dance, adding a mystical layer to its history. In modern times, the site became widely known as 'Homei' to specifically highlight the way the water sounds like the cry of a Phoenix.
The greatest attraction is the view from the high-altitude observation deck overlooking the upper Hirose River. From this vantage point, you can witness the magnificent sight of multiple waterfalls cascading down in layers. With a drop of approximately 25 meters and a width of about 10 meters, the contrast between the white, energetic water and the surrounding green foliage or autumn colors is breathtaking. The landscape changes its expression with every season, ensuring a new discovery every time you visit.
The scenery changes beautifully throughout the year. From early summer to summer, the vibrant green leaves and the white spray of the water create a refreshing and cooling atmosphere. In autumn, the surrounding trees turn brilliant shades of yellow, orange, and red, creating a deeply emotional and picturesque landscape as the colors reflect on the river surface. For the best photography, visiting during bright daylight hours is recommended to clearly capture the transparency of the water and the power of the falls.
Visitors can enjoy nature walks, light hiking, and photography. The walking paths allow you to feel the power of the waterfalls and hear the natural sounds up close. The observation deck offers a dynamic view of the cascading water. It is also an excellent environment for quiet contemplation and observing seasonal changes. Since nearby hot spring areas are close by, it is a great place to relax after a day of exploring nature.
There are several interesting spots near Homei Shijuhaki. The nearby Sakunami Onsen is a popular destination to combine a nature walk with a relaxing hot spring experience. Additionally, the Nikka Whisky Miyagikyo Distillery is located in the vicinity, allowing you to create a travel route that enjoys both natural beauty and industrial culture.
As this is a natural riverside area, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes, such as sneakers or trekking shoes, as there may be slippery rocks or stairs. Please prepare cash (Japanese Yen) for local transportation or nearby facilities. English signage and staff support are limited in the natural areas. No prior reservation is required, but please be mindful of weather conditions and water levels. For accessibility, please note that the natural terrain includes many steps and slopes, making it difficult to navigate in a wheelchair.
