Hokyo-in is an independent temple of the Rinzai school Zen sect, located in Saga, Ukyo-ku, Kyoto. Known by its mountain name Zennyu-san, the temple enshrines the Eleven-faced Senju Kannon (Thousand-armed Avalokitesvara) as its primary deity. The temple holds significant historical importance as the resting place of Ashikaga Yoshisane, the second Shogun of the Muromachi Shogunate, and the legendary warrior Kusunoki Masayoshi. One of its most enchanting features is the garden, which transforms into a breathtaking spectacle during autumn when the maple trees turn brilliant shades of red and orange, eventually covering the ground like a natural carpet.
The history of Hokyo-in is deeply intertwined with the Nanboku-cho period, specifically through its connection to Ashikaga Yoshisane and the loyalist warrior Kusunoki Masayoshi. The presence of their graves makes this a site of profound historical and spiritual significance. The peak beauty occurs during the autumn foliage season (typically November to early December), when the maple colors are at their most intense. The garden also offers a refreshing way to experience the lush greenery of late spring (around May). For the best experience, we recommend visiting during the bright daylight hours between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM, which allows for the best visibility of the garden's colors and the intricate details of the temple architecture.

Hokyo-in is situated in the highly popular Sagano and Arashiyama sightseeing area of Kyoto. It is conveniently located near landmarks such as Saga Shakado Temple and is easily accessible from JR Saga-Arashiyama Station and the Randen Arashiyama Station. You can also reach the area via city bus, arriving at the 'Saga Shakado-mae' stop.
