Hokuryu Sunflower Village is a vast sunflower field spanning approximately 23 hectares in Hokuryu Town, Hokkaido. Here, about 2 million sunflowers bloom beautifully along an east-facing slope. A unique feature of this location is that the sunflowers are oriented toward the visitors, creating a welcoming atmosphere. The golden landscape, shimmering under the sunlight, is renowned as one of Japan's most stunning scenic views. As the official 'Town Flower' of Hokuryu, these sunflowers are nurtured with great care by the community, radiating a bright, life-affirming energy to everyone who visits.
The sunflower is deeply cherished as the 'Town Flower' of Hokuryu. Since the development began in 1989, this vast field has been protected and cultivated by the local residents. Despite being a small town of about 1,750 people, the community takes immense pride in using the sunflowers to revitalize the region. The annual 'Sunflower Festival' is a significant cultural event that strengthens community bonds, making this more than just a tourist spot—it is a place where the soul of the local people resides.
The greatest draw is the sea of sunflowers that reaches its peak in early August. Because the flowers grow on an east-facing hill, they receive direct sunlight during the morning hours, making the bright yellow hues exceptionally vivid. Visitors can also enjoy exploring the 'Sunflower Maze,' with two different locations set up within the vast field. For families, the site offers various activities, including rides on a sightseeing vehicle to tour the grounds and a duck farm that allows children to connect with nature.
The peak season is from late July to mid-August. Visiting in early August is highly recommended, as most sections will be in full bloom, providing the most spectacular view. The best time of day is the morning, when the sun rises in the east and illuminates the flowers, making the colors appear most intense. Please note that visiting in winter is difficult due to heavy snow, so it is best to plan your trip during the summer season.
To help you navigate the vast area, sightseeing vehicles are available. You can enjoy the scenery from different perspectives by riding through the fields rather than just walking. The site also offers interactive experiences like the sunflower maze and nature observation at the duck farm. During the Sunflower Festival, special seasonal programs such as song shows, fireworks displays, and events featuring local specialties are held.
The 'Sunflower Tourism Center' is located near the entrance and serves as a great base for resting. Here, you can purchase souvenirs and enjoy snacks like soft-serve ice cream. The surrounding area is also dotted with various agricultural experiences and spots where you can feel the rich, natural essence of Hokkaido.
As you will be walking outdoors for an extended period in the summer heat, it is highly recommended to bring a hat, sunscreen, and plenty of water. Wear comfortable, breathable clothing and sturdy walking shoes, as some areas may be unpaved. Please be respectful of the flowers and avoid excessive contact with the plants.
