Hokkaido University is a renowned national university located in Sapporo, Hokkaido. Founded in 1876 as the Sapporo Agricultural College, it has evolved into one of Japan's leading comprehensive universities. Despite being situated in the center of Sapporo, the campus offers a vast, tranquil space filled with lush greenery and historic architecture. The campus is home to several Important Cultural Properties and Registered Tangible Cultural Properties, making it not just an academic institution, but a significant site for historical and cultural exploration.
The roots of this institution trace back to the Kaitakushi Provisional School established in 1872 and the Sapporo School that moved to this location in 1875. Formally opened as the Sapporo Agricultural College in 1876, the institution has undergone various name changes, including Hokkaido Imperial University, before becoming the Hokkaido University we know today. Many of the buildings preserve the architectural styles of the Meiji era, deeply connected to the history of Hokkaido's development. In particular, the structures inspired by the vision of Dr. William Smith Clark serve as iconic symbols of the region's history.
There are several iconic spots that draw visitors to the campus. Near the main gate, you will find the statue of Dr. William Smith Clark, a must-see landmark. The campus is dotted with historic buildings, including structures that retain the atmosphere of the old Sapporo Agricultural College. The 'Central Lawn' on the west side of the campus offers a wide expanse of greenery where you can enjoy the historic architecture in a natural setting. Additionally, the nearby Hokkaido University Botanical Garden provides a wonderful opportunity to experience a scientifically managed natural environment.
The landscape of the campus changes beautifully with every season. In spring, visitors can enjoy cherry blossoms and fresh greenery; in summer, the campus is covered in vibrant, lush foliage. Autumn brings stunning colorful leaves, while winter transforms the campus into a serene snowy wonderland. The bright daylight hours are ideal for observing the intricate details of the historic buildings and the Dr. Clark statue. Most visitors enjoy strolling through the campus and visiting the information center, 'Elm no Mori,' during the daytime.
The campus is an ideal environment for a contemplative walk amidst historic architecture. As you walk past the Important Cultural Properties, you can feel the essence of Japan's modernization process. To make your visit more efficient, you can pick up a campus map at the 'Elm no Mori' information center. The surrounding area also offers access to the botanical gardens, allowing for a deeper connection with the academic and natural environment.
Hokkaido University is surrounded by major Sapporo attractions. The Former Hokkaido Government Office (Red Brick Office) and the bustling commercial districts of central Sapporo are within walking distance or a short transit ride. The campus also serves as an excellent base for accessing other sightseeing spots via the subway or the nearby Sapporo Station shopping area.
Since the campus is quite large, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Please note that vehicle access for sightseeing is prohibited due to traffic regulations. As this is an active academic environment, visitors are asked to maintain a quiet and respectful atmosphere. While some facilities may accept credit cards, it is always wise to carry cash for various services. While some English signage may be available, please follow general Japanese social etiquette. Respect the students' study environment at all times.
