Hofukuji (Hofukuji-ji) is a Rinzai Zen temple of the Tofukuji school, located in Ijiri-no, Soja City, Okayama Prefecture. Known by its mountain name 'Iyama,' the temple preserves many significant historical buildings and cultural assets. The most striking feature is the three-story pagoda, a designated National Important Cultural Property, whose majestic presence captivates all who visit. Furthermore, the temple is renowned as a place where the famous Muromachi-period painter and monk Sesshu practiced, offering visitors a profound connection to the history of Japanese spiritual culture and art.
While the temple's origins are said to trace back to a monk of the Tendai sect, it currently operates as a Rinzai Zen temple. Although many structures were lost to the fires of the Sengoku-period Bitchu War, the temple underwent reconstruction during the Edo period. This led to the establishment of its current Zen-style layout, including the main halls and Zen meditation halls. Other treasures include the temple bell, a designated Important Cultural Property of Okayama Prefecture, and various historical documents.
