Mount Hiuchi is a 2,462m peak spanning Itoigawa City and Myoko City in Niigata Prefecture. It is celebrated as one of Japan's 100 Famous Mountains and specifically as one of the '100 Famous Flower Mountains,' serving as the highest peak of the Nyoki mountain range. The mountain features a gentle ridge structure running east to west, making the summit area relatively easy to navigate. It is a sanctuary for alpine plants and a vital habitat for the rock ptarmigan, particularly around the Raicho-hiroba (Ptarmigan Square) area near the Takayaike Pond wetlands, making it a premier spot for nature observation.
The region holds historical records of settlers arriving in the Sasagamine area at the foot of the southern mountain during the late Edo period. Historical structures include the Sasagoya hut built in 1913 and the Kyoto University Hut established in 1928. In 1930, a forestry service hut was built, which eventually became the predecessor to the current Takayaike Hut. A fascinating historical aspect was discovered in the 1960s during the maintenance of the summit's triangulation point, when two bronze Eleven-faced Kannon statues, believed to date back to the Kamakura period, were excavated.
