Hitoyoshi Onsen is a historic hot spring destination located in the upper reaches of the Kuma River in Hitoyoshi City, Kumamoto Prefecture. With a history spanning approximately 500 years, this area is also registered as a Japan Heritage site, characterized by a beautiful hot spring town that harmonizes perfectly with the lush nature of the Kuma River. The primary water types are mild alkaline simple springs and sodium bicarbonate springs, known for being colorless, transparent, and incredibly gentle on the skin. The area features numerous public bathhouses (sento), traditional inns (ryokan), and day-use facilities that warmly welcome all visitors.
The history of this region is profound. The nearby Aoi Aso Shrine, a National Treasure, is said to have been founded in 806 (the Heian period). Records show that even in 1492, the famous figure Sagara Tamesugui visited the springs, proving its long-standing popularity. A significant milestone in the modern development of the hot spring town occurred in 1910. Furthermore, the area is steeped in samurai culture; the ruins of Hitoyoshi Castle, built during the Kamakura period, feature unique stone walls known as 'Mushagari' that incorporated Western-influenced techniques, leaving a lasting architectural legacy.

Many public bathhouses operate from early morning until late at night, making them perfect for relaxing at the start or end of your day. However, please note that some facilities have scheduled cleaning times (e.g., 12:00–14:00), so it is recommended to check the schedule in advance.
Beyond soaking in the hot springs, you can immerse yourself in local culture. Activities center around relaxing in the water while gazing at the Kuma River or walking through historical sites. Some facilities even allow 'drinking the spring water' (inshu), allowing you to experience the mineral composition directly.
