Jade Coast is a breathtaking stretch of coastline located near the border of Asahi Town in Toyama Prefecture and Itoigawa City in Niigata Prefecture, facing the Sea of Japan. The most distinctive feature of this coast is the washing up of raw 'Jade' (Hisui) stones, which gives the area its name. It is a rare geographical phenomenon where precious jade, cherished since ancient times, is brought to the shore by the natural forces of the ocean and rivers.
The coastline consists of a pebble beach approximately 200 meters wide and 4 km long. The textures of the stones and the rhythmic waves create a mesmerizing natural landscape. The area is officially recognized for its high water quality and scenic beauty, having been selected for both the 'Selected Excellent Water Bath' and 'Japan's Best Beaches' lists by the Ministry of the Environment.
The presence of jade at Jade Coast is deeply connected to the region's history. There are two main theories regarding how the jade reaches the shore. One suggests it is carried from the jade-producing areas upstream of the Hime River and Aomi River by the force of the currents. The other theory relates to the geological formation of the Fossa Magna, suggesting that serpentinite layers on the seabed were pushed up to the coast by tectonic movements and wave action.
As a place shaped by geological history, this coast is more than just a leisure spot; it is a precious site where one can truly feel the movement of the Earth.
The greatest charm of this coast is the 'stones' sculpted by nature. Searching for smooth, naturally polished stones or rare pieces of raw jade is a unique experience found only here. From late May to mid-July, visitors can witness a spectacular sunrise rising from the horizon, offering a powerful sense of natural energy through the changing colors of the sky.
The character of the coast changes with the seasons. For the most beautiful sunrise views, an early morning visit between late May and mid-July is highly recommended. During the summer months, the area is well-equipped for beach activities, making it a popular destination for families. Regardless of the season, a stroll along the shore while listening to the sound of the waves provides a perfect moment of relaxation away from daily life.
There are many ways to enjoy the natural surroundings. The experience of searching for stones brought by the sea is a particularly memorable activity for many travelers. Additionally, you can enjoy local delicacies such as 'Tarajiru' (cod soup) at nearby drive-ins or local inns. For those wishing to stay longer, there are cottages and campsites available, allowing you to immerse yourself in the sounds of the ocean.
The coast is easily accessible via Etchu-Miyazaki Station on the Ainokaze Toyama Railway. The surrounding area features various amenities, including beach houses that become lively in summer, as well as cottages and campsites. Along National Route 8, many drive-ins serve as great bases for sightseeing and enjoying local seafood from the nearby Miyazaki Fishing Port.
Since the coast is a pebble beach, we recommend wearing sturdy, comfortable walking shoes. When searching for stones, the ground can be slippery, so it is better to wear practical footwear rather than sandals. Regarding payments, please note that some local facilities and drive-ins may only accept cash; it is wise to carry Japanese Yen with you. As this is a natural environment, please follow environmental etiquette by taking all your trash home with you to protect the coastline.
