Hisamatsu Park, located in Higashimachi, Tottori City, is a historic urban park developed around the site of the former Tottori Castle. The site is steeped in history, having served as a strategic location during the Sengoku period and being the stage for Toyotomi Hideyoshi's siege of Tottori. While most of the original structures were dismantled, the robust stone walls and castle base remain, and a project is currently underway to restore the castle to its Edo-period appearance. The park features wide lawns and offers breathtaking views of cherry blossoms (Somei Yoshino) in spring and vibrant autumn foliage.
The history of this site dates back to the Sengoku period. It played a vital role as a fortification and was the site of a famous siege by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. After the Edo period, the area was preserved as a site for historical preservation. Notably, the area holds significance in modern Japanese history, such as the post-war imperial visit by Emperor Showa in 1947. Recently, restoration efforts have been made to bring back the Edo-period atmosphere, with the main entrance bridge and the Otemon Gate already successfully reconstructed.
The park offers a unique blend of historical and modern architecture. A standout feature is the 'Jinpu-kaku,' a stunning white Western-style mansion that served as the villa for Marquis Ikeda and a residence for the Crown Prince during the Taisho era. Other key sights include the castle's stone walls, the castle base, and the reconstructed Otemon Gate and bridge. Visitors can also enjoy panoramic views of Tottori City by walking about 10 minutes to the Ninomaru area or 40 minutes to the Yamano-maru area. The surrounding area is also home to the Tottori Prefectural Museum and various modern heritage facilities.
The scenery changes beautifully with the seasons. In spring (March–April), the park is a celebrated destination, listed as one of Japan's top 100 cherry blossom spots due to its magnificent Somei Yoshino trees. In autumn (October–November), the landscape is painted with the colors of autumn leaves against the backdrop of Mount Hisamatsu. The 'Tottori 320,000 Koku Castle Festival' is also held every autumn, adding a lively and historical atmosphere to the season. Whether visiting during the day or exploring the seasonal shifts, the park never fails to impress.
Visitors can enjoy a peaceful stroll while observing historical ruins. Walking through the castle site allows you to visually grasp the structure of ancient fortifications. Near the reconstructed Otemon Gate and bridge, you can experience the architectural style of the Edo period. The park also offers a digital dimension; through VR content, you can experience the historical background of the Tottori Castle ruins and the Jinpu-kaku mansion using modern technology.
The area around the park is a hub for history and culture. Within a 10-minute walk, you can find the Jinpu-kaku mansion, the Tottori Prefectural Museum, Warabe-kan, Kozen-ji Temple, and Shinkyo-ji Park. Exploring these sites provides a multi-faceted view of Tottori's history. Additionally, the 'Takasagaya' cultural exchange center is nearby, offering further insight into local traditions.
Since the park is quite vast, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes or sneakers, as there are slopes and stone steps near the castle walls.
