Hiruzen Kogen is a highland plateau located in the northern part of Maniwa City, Okayama Prefecture, with an elevation of approximately 500 to 600 meters. Known as one of the representative resort areas in Western Japan, it attracts visitors with its abundant nature and exquisite culinary delights. The region is particularly famous for its dairy farming, especially its Jersey cow milk products, which are celebrated nationwide. The area offers a diverse range of activities suitable for families and outdoor enthusiasts alike, with landscapes that change beautifully with each season.
The region is said to have been formed by volcanic activity approximately one million years ago. While it once had a history as military-use land, it has since developed into a popular tourist destination for enjoying scenic landscapes. The area also preserves unique local folklore, such as the legends of 'Suiton' and 'Ikkankozo.' You can still see statues of Suiton throughout the plateau, a testament to how these ancient traditions and cultural stories are still cherished today.
Hiruzen Kogen offers numerous spots to connect with nature and animals. Highlights include 'Hirzen Jersey Land,' where you can interact with animals, and 'Hirzen Horse Park' for horse lovers. Additionally, visitors can enjoy the seasonal beauty of 'Hirzen Herb Garden Harvil,' as well as various campsites and hot spring facilities. Whether you are relaxing in the quiet of nature or gazing at breathtaking vistas, there is much to experience.
The best way to enjoy the plateau varies by season. From spring to summer, it is ideal for cycling through refreshing breezes, camping, or strolling through the herb gardens. In autumn, driving through the surrounding scenic routes, such as the Hiruzen Daisen Skyline, offers stunning views of the changing foliage. In winter, you can enjoy various activities at nearby ski resorts. We recommend enjoying the bright, natural scenery during the day and the tranquil, star-filled skies at night.
There is an abundance of activities unique to this highland environment. Cycling along the well-maintained Hiruzen Kogen Cycling Road is a fantastic way to feel the wind and enjoy the scenery. Staying overnight at a campsite or enjoying a relaxing retreat in the heart of nature, combined with tasting local specialties, provides a truly authentic experience of this region.
The area is surrounded by scenic driving courses that lead toward Niimi City, Takahashi City, and the Daisen area in Tottori Prefecture. Since access is primarily by car, we recommend exploring nearby hot spring towns and 'Michi-no-Eki' (roadside stations) while driving. Depending on the season, you can find many local specialty products at these roadside stations or nearby hot spring facilities.
As a highland area, please be mindful of temperature fluctuations. Even in summer, it can get chilly in the mornings and evenings, so we recommend bringing a light jacket or outer layer. For activities, please wear comfortable clothing and walking shoes. Regarding payment, while more facilities now accept credit cards and IC cards, some smaller shops or local events may still be cash-only; we recommend carrying some cash. While English signage is available at major tourist facilities and roadside stations, English-speaking staff availability may vary.
