Hirugami Onsen is a beautiful hot spring resort located in Achi Village, Shimoina District, Nagano Prefecture. The area gained fame when hot springs were discovered during the tunnel construction for the former JNR Nakatsu River Line. Today, it has developed into one of the most significant hot spring towns in southern Nagano, featuring a wide variety of accommodation options. The most notable feature is the natural spring water, which boasts a high alkalinity of over pH 9. This high-quality mineral water provides an exceptional bathing experience amidst a serene, natural environment.
The modern history of Hirugami Onsen began in 1973, following the discovery of hot springs during tunnel excavation for the Nakatsu River Line. However, historical records suggest the area has been known for its waters much longer; ancient texts such as 'Yuya Gongen' (1711) and 'Shinshu Ina-gun Mura-kagami' (1740) contain descriptions of the hot springs. While the region was once known for tobacco cultivation, the discovery of the springs and the improved accessibility via the Chuo Expressway allowed it to transform rapidly into a thriving hot spring resort. The area also holds deep spiritual roots, being home to the Achi Shrine, where the deity of wisdom, Omoikane, is enshrined.
Visitors to Hirugami Onsen can enjoy various facilities that utilize the local spring water and experience the local culture. There is a public heated pool that uses the natural spring water, allowing you to experience the mineral benefits even while swimming. In the center of the town, you will find the 'Asaichi Hiroba' (Morning Market Square), a lively spot where local specialties are sold. Here, you can find fresh vegetables harvested in Achi Village, as well as konnyaku and traditional pickles. While Hirugami Onsen is beautiful year-round, the spring season (March to May) and the autumn season (September to November) are particularly highly recommended. During these periods, you can enjoy the changing colors of the surrounding nature while soaking in the hot springs. If you visit the Asaichi Hiroba, be sure to arrive early, as it begins operating around 6:00 AM, offering a vibrant atmosphere with fresh local ingredients.
