Hiroshima City Botanical Garden is a premier urban park located in Kurashige, Saeki Ward, Hiroshima City. Spanning a vast area of 18.3 hectares, the park is defined by its iconic Grand Conservatory, which serves as the centerpiece of the garden. Visitors can discover a diverse range of flora, including various species of cacti, tropical water lilies, and begonias housed within specialized greenhouse facilities. The park also features a botanical museum and expansive lawn areas, making it a perfect destination for nature lovers.
The garden was established as a facility dedicated to the research, preservation, and exhibition of botanical life. It officially opened on November 3, 1976. Historically, the area was part of Itsukaichi Town in Saeki District, but following the municipal mergers in 1985, it became part of the modern Hiroshima City. Today, the park is managed and operated by the Hiroshima City Greenery and Living Things Association under a designated administrator system, ensuring the preservation of its rich biological diversity.
The heart of the garden lies in its diverse greenhouses. You can witness the beauty of exotic plants such as cacti, tropical water lilies, and begonias in a controlled environment. Beyond the greenhouses, the botanical museum offers educational insights into plant life, while the large lawn areas provide a relaxing space for visitors to unwind. The garden offers a changing landscape throughout the seasons, with different plant displays depending on the time of year. The park is open from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with the final entry permitted at 4:00 PM. To reach the garden via public transport, take the JR Sanyo Main Line to Itsukaichi Station, then transfer to a local bus and alight at the 'Shokubutsu Koen' (Botanical Garden) bus stop. If traveling by car, the garden is approximately a 15-minute drive from either the Itsukaichi IC or the Hatsukaichi IC on the Sanyo Expressway. Access is also available via buses from the Hiroshima Bus Center area.
We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes as the park covers a large area. Please note that the garden is closed every Friday, during the New Year holidays, and on August 6th (the Hiroshima Atomic Bomb Memorial Day). If a Friday coincides with August 6th or a national holiday, the park will be closed on the preceding Thursday instead.
