Hirosaki Park, located in the heart of Hirosaki City, Aomori Prefecture, covers an expansive area of approximately 492,000 square meters. The site is built upon the former grounds of Hirosaki Castle, the ancestral residence of the Tsugaru clan. The park preserves significant Edo-period structures, including a three-story castle keep, various castle gates, turrets (yagura), stone walls, and moats. These architectural remains are among the few in Japan that still retain their original historical appearance. The park is a major destination for crowds drawn to the changing seasons: the cherry blossoms in spring, the colorful foliage in autumn, and the illuminated snow lanterns in winter.
Hirosaki Castle was established in 1603 on its current site. Originally known as "Takaoka," the area was later renamed "Hirosaki." The castle was designed with a sophisticated defense system consisting of multiple enclosures (kuruwa) and a water moat, utilizing a "Sogamae" (total defense) structure that integrated the entire castle town. While the castle keep was once destroyed by lightning in 1627, the current Tatsumi Yagura was rebuilt with official permission. Following the Meiji Restoration, the site was opened to the public as a park in 1895.
The park is home to numerous historical structures. The centerpiece is the three-story castle keep, surrounded by various turrets such as the Tatsumi, Miomoshi, and Ushitora yagura, as well as gates like the Ote-mon, Higashi-mon, and Nanai-mon. The stone walls, bridges, and water moats are also essential parts of the historical landscape. In spring, the area is blanketed in cherry blossoms, while in autumn, the red and yellow leaves contrast beautifully against the stone walls. Inside the castle keep, you can also visit the Hirosaki Castle Historical Museum.

Note: Access to certain areas, such as the Honmaru and Kita-no-kuruwa, may require an admission fee between April 1st and November 23rd. The Botanical Garden is open from mid-April to November 23rd.
Seasonal events offer a deep connection to the passage of time, from the spring blossoms to the winter snow lanterns. During certain festivals, sightseeing boats may operate on the central moat, providing a unique perspective of the castle and its historical surroundings.
The area surrounding the park is rich in culture. Within the park, you can visit the Hirosaki Castle Botanical Garden and the Hirosaki Castle Historical Museum located inside the keep. Nearby, the Hirosaki City Museum offers further opportunities to deepen your understanding of local history.
