Hirizo Beach is a stunning coastal area located near the settlement of Nakagi in Minamiizu Town, Shizuoka Prefecture. Often called the 'Last Hidden Gem of Izu,' its unique geography is defined by steep cliffs that surround the shore. One of its most distinctive features is that there is no land access; the beach can only be reached by boat. This isolation has helped preserve its exceptionally high water transparency and pristine natural environment. The water is so clear that you can see the seabed even at depths of 5 meters or more, offering a mesmerizing view of colors shifting from emerald green to deep sapphire blue, reminiscent of a tropical resort.
Historically, this area was known as 'Hiiri-do-hama,' a name believed to originate from the beautiful sight of the sun setting within the natural stone arches. While the name 'Hirizo Beach' is now standard, its historical roots reflect a long-standing appreciation for the area's natural beauty. The Nakagi district has long been a fishing community, where traditional methods for harvesting spiny lobsters, abalone, and turban shells have been practiced for generations. Today, the local community continues to protect this precious natural environment.
The greatest draw of Hirizo Beach is the world-class snorkeling and diving experience. The seabed is home to a diverse array of marine life, providing a spectacular view for underwater enthusiasts. Visitors can also enjoy the breathtaking views from 'Aiai Cape,' looking out over the surrounding cliffs and islands. Beneath the surface, you can observe various tropical fish and seasonal marine creatures. Thanks to the extreme clarity of the water, the underwater visibility is exceptional, making you feel as though you are swimming inside a giant aquarium.
The optimal time to visit Hirizo Beach is during the summer months (approximately July to September). During this period, the area is officially open for swimming, and boat services operate from Nakagi Port to reach the beach. Outside of the summer season, access is restricted due to the lack of land routes. For the best experience, visit during the daytime when the sun's rays penetrate the water directly, highlighting the vibrant colors and maximizing visibility for snorkeling.
Activities here primarily center around snorkeling and diving via boat excursions. After taking a boat from Nakagi Port, you will enter a world of unparalleled beauty. The seabed features diverse topographical changes with various reefs and islands nearby. Additionally, you can enjoy the scenery from the sea by taking a sightseeing cruise, such as the 'Irozaki Cape Cruise,' to see the dramatic coastline from a different perspective.
Near Hirizo Beach, you can visit 'Aiai Cape' for panoramic views or 'Yusuge Park' to enjoy the coastal scenery. The primary hub for boat departures is Nakagi Port. Nakagi is a peaceful fishing village with several local guesthouses (minshuku), offering a quiet and authentic maritime atmosphere. The area also provides access to the Irozaki Cape region, where you can experience the grand, dynamic landscapes characteristic of the southern tip of the Izu Peninsula.
Since access requires a boat, it is crucial to check the boat schedule in advance. Please bring swimwear, sandals, and clothing that can easily get wet. If you plan to snorkel, ensure you have your own mask and fins. As most transactions in this remote area are handled in cash, we highly recommend carrying enough Japanese Yen. Please be mindful of the environment by taking all trash back with you and respecting the natural surroundings.
