Kaizan Park is a beautifully maintained park located near the summit of Mount Kaizan (elevation 149m) on the northern side of Hakatajima, Imabari City, Ehime Prefecture. As part of the Seto Inland Sea National Park, it is surrounded by rich, untouched nature. The most significant feature is the panoramic view from the summit observatory. From here, visitors can witness the majestic silhouettes of three major bridges: the Tatara Bridge, the Omishima Bridge, and the Hakata-Oshima Bridge. In spring, the mountain is transformed into a sea of pink as approximately 1,000 cherry trees bloom in full glory.
The history of this area dates back to the Meiji era. The name 'Kaizan' (meaning 'opening the mountain') originates from the large-scale land reclamation projects led by Shinkichi Magoshi, who invested his personal fortune to promote local industry and expand arable land. Following the Meiji and Taisho eras, the land was used for various agricultural purposes, including the cultivation of pyrethrum. In 1953, donations were made specifically to plant cherry trees, and in 1956, the area was designated as a National Park. In 1989, the area was revitalized as 'Kaizan Flower Park,' and today, with its well-maintained walking paths, observatory decks, and rest areas, it serves as a premier destination for nature lovers.
The undisputed highlight of the park is the view from the observatory. You can gaze out over the islands of the Seto Inland Sea and the elegant bridges that connect them. During the spring season, the sight of roughly 1,000 Yoshino cherry blossoms creates a soft pink haze across the mountain. During this peak period, the atmosphere becomes even more festive with the installation of lanterns for night viewing and the appearance of food stalls selling local treats like oden. Even outside of the cherry blossom season, the park remains a beautiful destination with seasonal changes, such as the blooming of colorful azaleas.
The most vibrant time to visit is during the cherry blossom season from March to April. During this period, the scenery is not only beautiful by day but also features a unique nocturnal charm thanks to the illuminated lanterns. While the park is open 24 hours a day, we recommend visiting during daylight hours for the best views or during the evening if you wish to experience the light-up events. Kaizan Park is an excellent destination for families and cyclists alike. The park features play equipment, including a 36-meter slide and jungle gyms, allowing children to play freely in nature. As a significant point along the Shimanami Kaido cycling route, it is a popular spot for cyclists to take a break. Whether you are cycling through the islands or hiking the trails, the summit offers a perfect place to rest and soak in the scenery.
The area surrounding the park is part of the scenic Shimanami Kaido route. For cyclists, the Hakata Rental Cycle (located near the Michi-no-Eki Hakata S/C Park) is a vital hub. The nearby islands also offer various dining options featuring fresh seafood from the Seto Inland Sea and beautiful historical landscapes. You can easily incorporate a visit to Kaizan Park into a travel route that includes Hakatajima and Oshima via car or bus.
Since the park is located near a summit at 149m, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Please dress in clothing suitable for light outdoor activity. While the park is a natural environment with many amenities, please respect public etiquette by taking all your trash home with you. While parking is free, please be aware that there may be restrictions for large buses during certain peak periods.
