The Hiraizumi Cultural Heritage Center is a specialized guidance facility that introduces the history and culture of the Hiraizumi World Heritage site through various media such as panels, videos, and historical documents. It serves as a central hub for understanding the profound history of the region. One of the highlights is the 'Reviving the Space-Time of Hiraizumi' exhibition, which uses a topographic model combined with video and audio to provide a three-dimensional, immersive experience of the ancient city. To ensure an inclusive experience for international visitors, the center provides audio guides available in four different languages, allowing for a deep, multilingual understanding of the local heritage.
The center provides a wealth of reference materials, including historical data and artifacts from archaeological excavations related to Hiraizumi. The exhibition rooms present the history of the area in a chronological manner, showcasing physical artifacts unearthed from the town. These items serve as vital evidence that supports and validates the historical narrative of Hiraizumi's golden age.
At the entrance, visitors can see panels introducing the cultural heritage of Hiraizumi and displays such as the Chuson-ji Lotus (specimen). The main exhibition room features a sophisticated display using a topographic model paired with video and audio for a spatial experience. Additionally, the center offers a VR (Virtual Reality) scope rental service. By using the scope, visitors can experience reconstructed views of the Muryokojin Temple site, the Yanagi no Gosho ruins, the wide roads of Kozoji Temple, and the ancient landscape of Mount Kokei as they appeared during the Heian period.
The facility is open throughout the year, but closing times vary depending on the season:
Please note that the center is closed during the New Year holidays (December 29 to January 3) and during periods of exhibition changes.
The 'Fureai Hall' is a versatile space where events involving stages and screens may be held. A unique activity is the VR scope rental (reservation required), which allows you to witness a digital reconstruction of Hiraizumi during the Heian period at specific viewpoints. The VR scope rental service is available from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
As a guidance facility, the center is the perfect starting point to learn about the cultural heritage of Hiraizumi. The surrounding area is dotted with numerous historical sites and landmarks related to the World Heritage designation.
