Hiyama Beach is a stunningly clear beach located in the Taisei district of Setana Town, Hokkaido. It has earned the highest 'AA' rating in the Ministry of the Environment's water quality survey, a distinction that highlights its exceptional cleanliness and beauty. The coastline features a shallow topography with relatively calm waves, making it an ideal environment for families with small children or travelers seeking a relaxing, tranquil time. On clear days, you can gaze out toward the horizon to see Okushiri Island, offering a breathtaking and expansive view unique to the west coast of Hokkaido.
This region has a long history of coexistence with nature, characterized by its rich coastal environment. The area around Hiyama Beach has been carefully preserved as one of Japan's beautiful coastlines, as evidenced by its high water quality rankings. The presence of facilities like the 'Michi-no-Eki Tekkui Land Taisei' (Roadside Station) makes this area a central hub for tourism and leisure that utilizes the local natural resources.
The greatest draw is undoubtedly the water's transparency. Thanks to the 'AA' quality rating, you can enjoy swimming or strolling along the shore in incredibly clear water. The shallow sandy beach is also a popular spot for children to enjoy 'treasure hunting,' searching for shells and small sea creatures. Furthermore, the wide-open view of Okushiri Island makes this an excellent spot for relaxation and photography.
The beach is typically open from mid-July to mid-August. The morning hours are particularly beautiful, as the calm sea and high transparency allow the sunlight to sparkle brilliantly on the water. In the afternoon, the sun can become quite strong, so we recommend utilizing the shade or the nearby roadside station facilities for breaks. Please note that in the event of bad weather or high waves, swimming may be prohibited (indicated by a red flag) for safety; always follow local instructions.
You can enjoy swimming in the sea or light recreation along the shoreline. The shallow terrain is perfect for nature observation, such as using buckets or nets to look for shells and small marine life. It is also popular among campers, who can combine a beach visit with an outdoor experience at the nearby 'Taisei Campground.' Please note that professional marine sports facilities (such as surfing or diving rentals) are not currently available here.
Directly in front of the beach is 'Michi-no-Eki Tekkui Land Taisei,' which provides easy access to essential facilities like parking, restrooms, and showers. For those wishing to stay overnight, the 'Taisei Campground' is located nearby, allowing for a full seaside camping experience. The surrounding area is also a beautiful scenic drive route.
When visiting, please prepare swimwear, sandals, towels, sunscreen, and a hat. If you plan to use the showers at the roadside station (for a fee), remember to bring a change of clothes and toiletries. Regarding payment, most services such as tent rentals, showers, and parking are primarily cash-based, so please ensure you carry enough cash. Please also follow local etiquette by taking your trash home and protecting the natural environment.
