Hinoyama Park is a municipal park located on Mount Hinoyama in Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. It is part of the Seto Inland Sea National Park (Kanmon Strait area) and is characterized by its vast, expansive views that encompass the Kanmon Strait, the Shimonoseki urban area, and the Sea of Japan. The park is divided into two main sections: the 'Summit Park' at the top and the 'Foot of the Mountain Park' at the base, which features areas like the tulip garden. The night view is particularly famous and is officially registered as a Japanese Nightscape Heritage site. Visitors can enjoy a dynamic landscape where seasonal flowers and the dramatic scenery of the strait meet.
The area is steeped in deep historical significance. It is a place associated with the legends of the Battle of Dan no Ura, and the summit contains the remains of the 'Hinoyama Battery,' a historical site related to the Shimonoseki Fortifications. Since 1958, the Hinoyama Ropeway has served as a popular way for tourists to reach the top. Currently, the park is undergoing modernization and restructuring. Plans are underway for next-generation facilities, such as the installation of a pulse gondola (fixed-circuit gondola), to replace older structures and provide a more modern viewing experience for future generations.
The park offers a wide variety of attractions. At the Summit Park, a 360-degree panoramic view unfolds; on clear days, you can see ships crossing the Kanmon Strait and even distant landscapes. The Hinoyama Battery ruins serve as an important spot for learning about local history. At the Foot of the Mountain Park, the landscape changes beautifully with the seasons. In May, the area is particularly vibrant with the blooming of the Turkish Tulip Garden and various azaleas, attracting many visitors with the fusion of natural colors and the unique topography of the region.
You can enjoy different scenery depending on when you visit. In spring (April to May), the landscape is colored by blooming tulips and azaleas. In summer and autumn, the contrast between the blue sea and sky is particularly striking. The best time to visit is around sunset. The night view of the Kanmon Strait, a registered Nightscape Heritage site, allows you to observe the lights of the city and the dynamic movement of the strait against the darkness. Please note that since the ropeway is currently in an update period, it is important to check the operational status of facilities before your visit.
Activities at Hinoyama Park center around nature walks and landscape appreciation. You can stroll along the well-maintained paths of the Summit and Foot of the Mountain parks to observe seasonal flowers. While the ropeway is currently undergoing updates, there is high anticipation for the new mode of transport, such as the planned pulse gondola, to enhance the sightseeing experience. Exploring the historical battery ruins also offers a chance to connect with the local history. It is a place where nature, history, and breathtaking views combine for a diverse way to spend your time.
The area surrounding the park is dotted with convenient facilities and historical sites. The Shimonoseki urban area and the Dan no Ura area are famous as settings for historical narratives, making them easy to include in a sightseeing route. For access, the park is easily reachable via the Shimonoseki IC on the Chugoku Expressway, making it a very convenient destination for driving tours. You can enjoy the dynamic views of the strait while exploring the historical spots in the vicinity.
As the park includes sloped areas and outdoor walking paths, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. Please prepare clothing suitable for the season. While most areas are free, cash may be required for parking or specific facilities. Currently, the ropeway is in a replacement/update period, so please confirm the access method to the summit in advance. General photography is permitted, but please follow local etiquette to respect the environment. Regarding accessibility, while there are wheelchair-accessible parking spaces and entrances, please be aware that some parts of the park may have uneven terrain or steps.
