The Hinokinai River Embankment (Hinokinai-gawa Tei) is a nationally designated scenic spot located in Semboku City, Akita Prefecture. This path features a line of Somei Yoshino cherry trees situated on the left bank of the Hinokinai River. The total length of the embankment is approximately 1,950 meters, featuring 409 cherry trees. During spring, the blooming blossoms create a magnificent scenery that flows alongside the river. This location is recognized as one of the "Top 100 Famous Cherry Blossom Spots in Japan" and is a representative cherry blossom destination in the Tohoku region.
The history of these cherry blossoms dates back to 1934. To celebrate the birth of the then Emperor and the completion of the Hinokinai River embankment, local volunteers and students planted Somei Yoshino saplings. In 1948, a grand cherry blossom viewing party was held, which helped popularize the term "Flower Tunnel." On February 18, 1975, the area was officially designated as a National Scenic Spot. To preserve the trees, which include some over 90 years old, local residents and Semboku City continuously perform maintenance such as pruning, pest control, and fertilization.
The most spectacular view is the 2-kilometer-long tunnel of Somei Yoshino blossoms. When the flowers reach full bloom, they form a dense canopy over the embankment. The sight of the blossoms harmonizing with the river flow is a unique characteristic of this place. The historical significance of the site and the well-maintained trees, preserved through community efforts, also add to its profound charm.
The best time to visit is typically in April, coinciding with the peak bloom of the Somei Yoshino variety. It is highly recommended to visit during the full bloom period to experience the peak beauty. The white and pale pink colors of the blossoms are most vivid during bright daylight hours. Please note that the scenery changes depending on the season and weather conditions.
You can enjoy a relaxing stroll along the walking paths through the cherry blossom tunnel. It is common to visit to observe the seasonal changes of nature. This area is a perfect addition to a cultural itinerary that includes visiting the historic samurai residences (Bukeyashiki) in the nearby Kakunodate area.
Near the Hinokinai River Embankment, you will find the famous "Kakunodate Samurai District." The samurai residences feature many weeping cherry trees (Shidarezakura), offering a different type of beauty compared to the Somei Yoshino at the river. The area also provides easy access to other sightseeing spots in Semboku City and toward Lake Tazawa.
For walking along the embankment, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. Since you will be in a natural environment, please dress according to the weather. While the area is open, please be mindful of your surroundings. If you use local transportation or nearby facilities, you may need cash or a transportation IC card. Please respect the natural environment by following local etiquette and protecting the plants.
