Nihara Limestone Cave, located in Nihara, Oku Tama, Tokyo, is a designated natural monument of Tokyo. With a total length of 1,270 meters and an elevation difference of 134 meters, it is one of the largest limestone caves in the Kanto region. The cave was formed over countless years as limestone was eroded by the waters of the Ogawa Valley, a tributary of the Nihara River. A key feature is its stable internal temperature of approximately 11°C throughout the year, making it exceptionally cool in the summer and relatively mild in the winter.
The area has a history as a center for mountain worship. Today, it serves as a central attraction for tourism in the Nihara area. The growth of limestone formations is incredibly slow; for instance, it takes about 200 years for a stalactite to grow just 3 cm, and roughly 400 years to form a significant stalagmite. These geological formations are precious legacies that tell the story of Earth's long history.
