Hinjitsukan is a historic structure located in Futami, Ise City, Mie Prefecture, completed in 1887 (Meiji 20). It was originally constructed as a high-class lodging and resting facility for noble guests visiting the sacred Ise Jingu Shrine. Currently designated as a National Important Cultural Property, it continues to captivate many as a precious museum that preserves the sophisticated Japanese traditional styles and the vibrant culture of the Meiji era.
The building has a dramatic history, having been constructed in an extremely short period to coincide with the visit of the Empress Dowager Eisho to Ise. Every detail of its architecture was meticulously crafted to provide hospitality to the distinguished guests of the Meiji era. From 1911, it served as an annex to the adjacent Futamikan, playing a vital role in the pilgrimage to Ise Jingu. In 2010, the main building, the grand hall, and the storehouse were designated as National Important Cultural Properties. As a witness to the intersection of Japan's modernization and tradition, its appearance still vividly reflects the spirit of the Meiji era.
The greatest charm lies in the delicate design that preserves the architectural styles of the Meiji era. During the New Year period, you can experience the festive spirit of Japanese tradition with displays of custom-made Kadomatsu (pine decorations), Kagamimochi (rice cakes), and large Shimenawa (sacred ropes). Since special seasonal events (such as Hinamatsuri tours) may occur, we recommend checking the latest information before visiting. The architecture's fine details are most beautifully illuminated by natural light during the daytime.
Here, you can experience more than just a simple architectural tour; you can touch the very essence of the Japanese spirit. Within these historical spaces, you can feel the traditional Japanese aesthetic firsthand. In the past, special events such as matcha tea service have been held. Hinjitsukan is located in the "Futami" area, a crucial part of the pilgrimage route to Ise Jingu. It is an ideal route to visit the famous Futami Okitami and the Meoto Iwa (Married Couple Rocks) alongside your Ise Jingu pilgrimage, allowing you to enjoy both historical architecture and the natural beauty of the sea.
As this is a protected National Important Cultural Property, there are rules to preserve the structure. Please be mindful of your steps and maintain a quiet atmosphere while observing the exhibits.
