Himi Seaside Botanical Garden (affectionately known as Seaside Park) is a specialized botanical garden located in Yanagida, Himi City, Toyama Prefecture. Since its opening in 1996, it has showcased the beautiful natural environment of the Noto Peninsula Quasi-National Park facing Toyama Bay. Spanning approximately 6.4 hectares, it is one of the few facilities in Japan that focuses specifically on "seaside plants," allowing visitors to enjoy both plant diversity and coastal scenery. In 2021, the garden underwent a significant renewal using local "Himi Sugi" (cedar), evolving into an even more charming space deeply rooted in the local community.
The site is located in a scenic area once praised by the poet Otomo no Yakamochi as "Nagahama of Matsuda-e." This coastline has long been famous for its beautiful white sands and green pine trees, maintaining a natural beauty that remains untouched by heavy development. As part of the "Toyama Prefecture Botanical Park Project," the garden plays a vital role in preserving and passing down the natural heritage of the region to future generations through its specialized collection of coastal flora.
The garden features several distinct areas to enjoy diverse plant life. First, the "Exhibition Garden" in the center of the facility features plants from the nearby Matsuda-e and Abuga-jima areas, alongside various seaside plants from across Japan. Next, the "Greenhouse" houses exotic tropical and subtropical species such as cycads and pineapples. The "Grass Tube" focuses on climbing plants, where you can see the beautiful forms of Brahmi and Bougainvillea. On the seaside side, the "Seaside Walking Garden" allows you to observe plants growing in an environment very close to the actual coastline. Finally, the observation space on the top floor offers a breathtaking, wide-angle view of Toyama Bay.
You can enjoy the changing expressions of the plants throughout the seasons. The period from May to October is particularly vibrant, when the lush greenery and the vitality of the tropical plants are at their peak. During the summer vacation season, special events like the "Parent-Child Interaction Festival" are held. Visiting during bright daylight hours is ideal for seeing the vivid colors of the greenhouse and exhibition gardens. For a truly luxurious experience, visit in the late afternoon to watch the sunset over the ocean from the observation deck.
The botanical garden offers educational opportunities to connect with nature. As the garden covers a wide area, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Since temperature and humidity change in the greenhouses and exhibition areas, bringing clothing that allows for easy temperature regulation is advisable. To protect the collection, touching or removing plants is strictly prohibited. While photography of the scenery is free, please be mindful of specific display restrictions.
