The Hikawa Maru is a 12,000-ton class passenger-cargo ship completed in 1930 by Nippon Yusen Kaisha. Currently moored in front of Yamashita Park in Yokohama, it serves as a museum ship open to the public. This vessel is an extremely precious industrial heritage site, telling the story of its active service on Pacific routes before and after the war, and its significant role as a hospital ship during wartime. Designated as a National Important Cultural Property (Historical Material) in 2016, the ship preserves much of its original shipbuilding technology, luxurious passenger interiors, and elegant Art Deco design elements.
The ship was a mainstay of the Seattle route, crossing the North Pacific many times. Its history is remarkably dramatic; during the Pacific War, it was operated as a naval hospital ship, surviving three separate mine strikes before the end of the war. After the war, it returned to service as a passenger-cargo ship until 1960. Since 1961, it has been moored in Yokohama Port, playing a vital role in conveying Japan's maritime history as a piece of modern industrial heritage. The ship's name is derived from the Omiya Hikawa Shrine, and even today, the deity of the shrine is enshrined in the sacred space within the bridge.
The interior is divided into several areas that invite visitors into the world of a luxury liner from a bygone era. In the passenger cabins, you can observe the spaces where travelers once lived. The crew areas showcase the workspaces and equipment necessary to operate the vessel, illustrating the realities of maritime life at the time. The exhibition areas use various materials to explain the ship's turbulent history, shipbuilding techniques, and its role as a hospital ship. From the outdoor open deck, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the Yokohama Marine Tower, Yamashita Park, and the Minato Mirai skyline.
The Hikawa Maru is open year-round, but its appearance changes beautifully depending on the weather and time of day. During bright daylight hours, you can closely examine the intricate decorations and exhibition materials. In the evening, the open deck offers a stunning view of the changing scenery of Yokohama Port. Depending on the season, the sea breeze can be very pleasant, making it a perfect time to rest on the deck chairs. Please note that access to certain areas may be restricted depending on weather conditions or sea states, so checking the status in advance is recommended.
Visitors can enjoy a self-guided tour using the provided guide maps. On certain occasions, special "Captain-Led Tours" are held, offering a deeper insight into the ship's structure and navigation history. The open deck provides a spacious, airy environment to view Yokohama's landmarks like the Yokohama Marine Tower against the backdrop of the sea. Hikawa Maru is located in Yamashita Park, one of Yokohama's most famous scenic spots. Nearby, you can find the NYKkaikan (Nippon Yusen Kaisha Historical Museum), and combo tickets are sometimes available. The area is also within walking distance of the Minato Mirai district, allowing you to expand your sightseeing while enjoying the beautiful harbor views.
As the ship contains many stairs and narrow passages, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. To protect the historical materials and the ship itself, please follow all posted rules regarding the displays and equipment. While no prior reservation is required for standard entry, it is recommended to check in advance for special guided tours.
