Higashizawa Ohashi Bridge is a magnificent red arch bridge spanning the Higashizawa Valley in Hokuto City, Yamanashi Prefecture. Measuring 90 meters in length and approximately 48.9 meters in height, it is widely known as the "Red Bridge." The bridge creates a striking visual contrast with the surrounding natural environment, serving as a symbolic landmark of the Yatsugatake Kogen Line.
The bridge was designed with an arch structure specifically to harmonize with the natural landscape of the Higashizawa Valley. Located at the foot of the Yatsugatake mountain range, this area has long been blessed with abundant water and lush greenery. The choice of a vibrant red color was a deliberate aesthetic decision to enhance the landscape without detracting from the natural beauty, establishing the bridge as a local landmark.
The most prominent feature of Higashizawa Ohashi Bridge is its vivid color and grand structure. From its high vantage point of nearly 49 meters, visitors can look down upon the Kawamata River flowing below and enjoy the sweeping views of the surrounding mountains. On the eastern side of the bridge (the Kiyosato Station side), there is an observation deck designed to provide a full view of the bridge's entire structure and the breathtaking valley scenery. The changing colors of the seasons, paired with the bridge's red hue, create a unique and unforgettable spectacle.
The bridge offers a different face to visitors throughout the year. In spring, the bridge stands out against the fresh, vibrant greenery of the Yatsugatake foothills. The most spectacular time to visit is from mid-October to early November, when the autumn foliage is at its peak. Even in winter, the bridge provides a sharp, beautiful contrast against the clear, crisp skies.
There are well-maintained walking paths around the bridge. A trekking course runs along the Kawamata River valley, stretching from Higashizawa Ohashi Bridge toward the Taryu Falls. This route allows you to experience the unique topography and natural formations of the valley on foot. You can also enjoy the view from the parking area or the observation deck on the eastern side of the bridge.
Higashizawa Ohashi Bridge is a key stop on the scenic driving routes of the Kiyosato area. The surrounding region is dotted with driving courses via the Yatsugatake Kogen Line and various trekking paths for nature lovers. Nearby natural attractions, such as Taryu Falls, make this an excellent part of a larger nature-themed itinerary.
