Higashizawa Rose Park is a specialized rose park located in Murayama City, Yamagata Prefecture. Spanning approximately 7 hectares, the park is home to about 750 varieties and a total of 20,000 rose bushes. The park offers a rich natural space that changes its expression with every season, filled with the enchanting scent of roses. The layout is designed to engage not just sight, but also smell and taste, featuring a dedicated "Scented Rose Area" and facilities where you can enjoy rose-infused sweets.
The park was developed as a facility to promote the cultivation and appreciation of roses. The "Rose Festival," held to coincide with the peak blooming seasons, has become a symbolic local event for the region. Designed to utilize the natural topography, the park plays a vital role in conveying the local natural environment alongside seasonal flora. Given the vast diversity of rose varieties, it holds significant botanical value and serves as an important cultural and tourism resource.
The park features a classic garden with beautiful landscapes and specialized areas themed around the scent of roses. In the areas with high variety, visitors can witness a spectacular sight of roses blooming in a multitude of colors. Additionally, the "Bara Koryukan" (Rose Exchange Center) offers a way to experience the culinary culture of roses. Here, you can enjoy unique rose-flavored soft-serve ice cream while relaxing on the terrace overlooking the garden scenery.
You can enjoy different botanical wonders depending on when you visit. The most spectacular scenery occurs during the Rose Festivals in June and from mid-to-late September. In mid-April, the cherry blossoms planted throughout the park reach full bloom, offering a different seasonal color. Please note that the park is closed from November to March, so it is important to check the season before your visit.
Visitors can enjoy leisurely strolls surrounded by the colors and scents of roses. At the Bara Koryukan, you can experience the culture of roses through taste by trying the signature rose soft-serve ice cream. The second-floor terrace provides a perfect spot to rest while taking in a panoramic view of the vast garden. Observing the subtle changes in seasonal plants is a unique experience that only this park can offer.
The park is surrounded by the beautiful, natural landscapes of Murayama City. It is conveniently located about a 20-minute walk from JR Murayama Station, making it accessible via public transport. The surrounding area features various nature-based sightseeing spots, making it a great starting point for tours through Yamagata Prefecture.
Cash or credit cards (Visa/MasterCard, etc.) can be used at the Bara Koryukan and souvenir shops. However, since availability may change depending on events, carrying cash is recommended.
While there are basic signs and information boards, detailed English support from staff may be limited. It is helpful to have a translation app ready.
No advance reservations are required for general visits. During the Rose Festival, an admission fee is required, but pre-booking is not necessary.
The park utilizes natural terrain and includes some slopes, so comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. Depending on the season, bringing a hat or parasol for sun protection is also a good idea.
Photography is permitted, but please be mindful of other visitors. Please follow local rules regarding the use of tripods or large-scale photography.
Major paths are paved with asphalt, making parts of the park accessible for wheelchairs. However, due to the natural slopes, assistance may be needed. Multipurpose toilets are located at the main entrance, west entrance, classic garden, and near the boat house. Service animals are welcome.
