Hachimaki Observatory is a beautiful night view spot located on the slopes of Mt. Rokko in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, and is closely associated with Japan's heritage of beautiful night-scapes. Because its altitude is not extremely high, it is less affected by sudden weather changes compared to higher mountain peaks, allowing for a stable and reliable view of the city lights. The proximity to the ports of Rokko Island and Port Island creates a dynamic and spectacular landscape of light, characteristic of a coastal port city.
The area is located along the Omirokko Driveway, which opened in 1929. This route has long been cherished as a scenic way to enjoy the beautiful landscapes of Kobe. In 2006, 'Night View Information Boards' were installed to help visitors understand the scenery more deeply, enhancing the area's infrastructure for tourism. The location is also recognized for its cultural value as a place where nature and urban lights exist in perfect harmony.
The greatest attraction is the view of the lights from Rokko Island and Port Island spreading out below you. The lights from streets and buildings create a diverse palette of colors—white, blue, yellow, and green—forming a stunning landscape that leads toward the sea. On clear days, you can even catch a glimpse of the grand, curved form of Osaka Bay in the distance. The observatory area is also integrated with greenery, allowing you to enjoy the view in harmony with nature.
The ideal time for viewing is from the 'magic hour' just after sunset through the night. While the lights are incredibly vibrant late at night, the scenery changes with the seasons. The view can feel even more brilliant during seasons when the sea breeze is pleasant or when seasonal lighting displays are active. However, please be aware that visibility can change during the winter or during unstable weather periods.
The primary experience here is the tranquil observation of the night sky. Thanks to the well-maintained benches and gazebos (azumaya), you can sit down and slowly observe the changing expressions of light over time. Moving away from the hustle and bustle of the city to look down from this elevated position provides a unique perspective that feels different from daily life.
Hachimaki Observatory is situated along the Omirokko Driveway, a popular driving course in the Mt. Rokko mountain range. There are other observation spots nearby, such as 'Kyuseidai' and 'Tenrandai,' which offer views from even higher altitudes. Since access is primarily by car, it is a great idea to combine your visit with a drive through the surrounding cafes and nature-rich areas.
As temperatures drop in mountainous areas at night, please bring clothing suitable for the season. We highly recommend bringing warm layers for your outing. Since you may need to navigate curves to enter and exit the parking area, please drive with caution. To protect the environment, please ensure you take all your trash home and follow local etiquette.
