Higashigohata Tanada is a stunning collection of terraced rice fields located in the Yutani district of Nagato City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, facing the Sea of Japan. In 1999, it was officially selected by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries as one of "Japan's 100 Best Rice Terraces." While most rice terraces in Japan are located deep in the mountains, the Higashigohata area is unique because the hilly coastline reaches right down to the sea. This creates a rare and breathtaking landscape where the emerald rice fields seem to merge directly into the blue waters of the Sea of Japan.
Historically, securing water resources was a vital challenge in this region. The irrigation of these terraces has long been supported by precious water sources such as the "Fukada Pond." The area also blends tradition with innovation; for example, the production of "Yokihi no Yume" (Yang Guifei's Dream) rice and the introduction of Tajima cattle for dairy farming are part of efforts to preserve the landscape while evolving agricultural practices. The harmonious coexistence of nature and sustainable agriculture, including soil improvement through cattle grazing, defines the cultural identity of this land.

The most spectacular sight is the sunset over the Sea of Japan, followed by the appearance of "Isaribi" (fishing boat lights). From mid-May to early August, countless lights from fishing boats float on the dark sea, creating a mystical and dreamlike atmosphere alongside the terraced fields. Additionally, the landscape changes beautifully with the seasons, from the reflective water surfaces in spring to the lush greenery in summer. It is one of the most iconic photographic spots in Yamaguchi Prefecture.
The best time to visit depends on the visual experience you seek:

Visitors primarily enjoy observing the geometric beauty of nature and landscape photography. The sight of the Isaribi lights is a profound experience of the fusion between human activity and the natural world. You can also observe the diverse ecosystem of plants and animals that thrive in the local waterways and ponds.
Nagato City offers many other attractions. You can include the famous Motonosumi Shrine or areas related to the poet Misuzu Kaneko in your itinerary. A scenic drive along the coastline of the Sea of Japan is also highly recommended to enjoy the coastal views.
