Overview & Charm

Heiwadai Park is a significant urban park located in the hilly terrain of Shimokita, Miyazaki City. The most striking feature of the park is the 'Peace Tower' that rises majestically in the center. The park is designed with well-maintained walking paths, open exercise areas, and flowerbeds that change with the seasons, serving as a vital relaxation space for both locals and visitors. Surrounded by rich greenery, it offers a refreshing escape into nature right within the city.

History & Cultural Background

The history of this park dates back to 1940. As part of the '2600th Anniversary Project,' the 'Ametsuchi no Hashira' (the Pillar of Heaven and Earth) was constructed alongside the development of the surrounding area. At the time, the project involved immense labor and resources, and the design was intended to symbolize national strength.

Following World War II, under GHQ instructions, certain names and symbols associated with State Shintoism were temporarily removed. The site was later designated as a city park in 1957, and as development progressed, it was restored as a symbol of peace. Notably, the Peace Tower served as the second starting point for the torch relay during the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. Today, it stands as a cherished community space and a monument to peace.
