Hekinan Seaside Aquarium is a municipal aquarium located within the Hekinan City Seaside Park in Aichi Prefecture. Opened in 1982, the facility is also affectionately known as the "Hekinan Marine Dome," a name that encompasses both the aquarium on the 1st floor and the Hekinan City Youth Marine Science Museum on the 2nd floor. It houses approximately 4,000 creatures, including 300 different species of fish primarily from the Japanese coast, offering a deep look into the local marine ecosystem.
Since its opening on July 4, 1982, this facility has served as a vital center for regional nature education. The building is a two-story reinforced concrete structure situated within the vast 120,000m² Hekinan City Seaside Park. The aquarium plays a crucial role in preserving and showcasing the natural environment of the region, with a specific focus on the biological diversity of the Ise Bay and Mikawa Bay areas.
The primary focus of the aquarium is the diverse fish species found along the Japanese coast. Visitors can observe about 300 different types of fish, bringing the wonders of the nearby sea closer to view. A standout feature is the exhibition and protection of rare Japanese freshwater fish that are currently endangered. Additionally, the biotope area allows visitors to feel a sense of connection with nature. On the 2nd floor, the "Hekinan City Youth Marine Science Museum" offers interactive learning through themes like "Water - From Forest to Sea," featuring quiz rallies and hands-on exhibits.
The aquarium is generally open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. During the summer vacation period, the closing time is extended to 6:00 PM, allowing visitors to enjoy the exhibits during the cooler evening hours. Depending on the season, various events such as nature observation sessions, craft workshops, and sketching contests may be held; it is recommended to check the seasonal program before visiting. Please note that the facility is closed on Mondays (if a Monday is a public holiday, it closes on the following day).
Beyond simple observation, the facility offers various educational activities. At the science museum on the 2nd floor, visitors can learn about the water cycle and marine ecosystems through interactive displays and quiz rallies. Special seasonal events, such as fish feeding experiences, are also held periodically. These activities provide a wonderful opportunity for children to engage with natural sciences in an enjoyable way.
The aquarium is located within the expansive Hekinan City Seaside Park. The surrounding area is perfect for strolling and relaxing while enjoying the beautiful seaside scenery. Visitors often enjoy the area for light snacks and drinks, as food trucks occasionally appear. The park is dotted with various spots to experience the local natural beauty.
As much of the facility involves walking, we recommend wearing comfortable clothing and shoes. This is especially important if you plan to participate in the science museum activities or special events.
