Heijo Palace Site Historical Park is a national park dedicated to the preservation and reconstruction of the ruins from the Nara period. This area is recognized as a World Heritage site, featuring a vast landscape dotted with significant historical remains. Visitors can enjoy free-roaming strolls through the park, immersing themselves in a serene environment surrounded by nature and profound historical landscapes.
This site marks the location of Heijo-kyo, the capital during the Nara period. The area serves as a vital location for understanding the structure of the ancient capital through carefully preserved and reconstructed ruins. As a World Heritage site, it holds immense cultural value, with the historical landscape being meticulously maintained to showcase the grandeur of ancient Japan.
The park features reconstructed architectural wonders such as the Suzaku Gate and the Daigokuden (Great South Palace). The vast grounds are organized into well-maintained areas designed for exploring historical vestiges. The Suzaku Gate Plaza, in particular, offers a magnificent view of the reconstructed historical scenery, providing a window into the past.
The scenery changes beautifully with the seasons. Around late March, the park becomes a stunning destination for cherry blossom viewing (Sakura), offering a picturesque backdrop for your visit. Throughout the year, the park serves as a peaceful space for walking and relaxation, allowing visitors to feel the natural shifts in the environment.
Due to the immense scale of the park, using a rental bicycle is highly recommended to explore efficiently. Services such as the 'Tenpyo Miharashi Kan' or bike-sharing programs like Docomo Bike Share and Hello Cycling are available. These allow you to cover more ground easily. Additionally, some facilities may host special events utilizing AR (Augmented Reality) to bring the ancient history to life.
The park houses the 'Tenpyo Miharashi Kan' exhibition facility. For those traveling by car, the 'Ken'ei Nara Meguri Heijo Palace Mae Parking Lot' is available nearby. The site is also accessible via major stations such as Kintetsu Yamato-Saidaiji Station and Kintetsu Shin-Omiya Station.
Since the park is exceptionally large, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes and clothing suitable for outdoor movement. While many arrive via bus or walking from nearby stations, public transportation is the most common way to visit. Please check official websites regarding photography rules or specific event requirements. As parking lots can become crowded during peak tourist seasons, planning your arrival in advance is highly recommended.
