Located in Motomiya City, Fukushima Prefecture, "Hebinohana: Village of Flowers and History" is a historic Japanese garden established during the late Meiji era. The garden features a diverse array of plants that change beautifully with the seasons, creating a space where nature and history coexist harmoniously. The centerpiece of the garden is the "Hebinohana Goten," a magnificent mansion perched on a hill overlooking a pond. This structure is a precious architectural treasure that preserves the building styles of its time. The history of this site dates back to the late Meiji era. It was originally developed by the father-and-son duo, Iwao Ito and Nori Ito, who were both wealthy farmers and influential political figures. Since its opening in 1899, it was known as the "Hebinohana Yuraen" (Hebinohana Pleasure Garden). The construction of the Hebinohana Goten took ten years to complete. Due to its immense historical value, the mansion was designated as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan in 1996. Local legends regarding the place name, which may relate to battles in the late Heian period or specific topographical features, add a deep layer of cultural mystery to the area.
The garden is designed to showcase different botanical wonders throughout the year. A major highlight is the rose garden, which boasts approximately 400 rose bushes. Depending on when you visit, you can enjoy cherry blossoms, azaleas, hydrangeas, water lilies, peonies, wisteria, or tulips. The architecture of the Hebinohana Goten is equally impressive; visitors can admire the intricate carvings on the entrance eaves and the exquisite folding screen paintings by famous artists such as the Kano school's Hida Shuzan and Katsuta Kyokin. The mansion even contains calligraphy by the statesman Ito Hirobumi, reflecting the high cultural standards of the era. The view of the pond surrounding the structures is another essential element of the experience.
The botanical landscape changes significantly by season. In spring, you can enjoy cherry blossoms, tulips, peonies, and wisteria. Early summer brings roses, hydrangeas, and water lilies, while autumn is perfect for viewing the changing colors of the leaves. To fully enjoy the blossoms, it is highly recommended to visit during their specific blooming periods. For the best experience of the architectural details and plant colors, visiting during bright daylight hours is ideal. Please note that opening hours may vary depending on the season, so checking in advance is advised.
Visitors can enjoy dining amidst nature within the garden. From April to September, a special "Flower Viewing BBQ Set" (3,500 JPY per person) is available, allowing you to enjoy a hassle-free barbecue. There are also options for bringing your own food for indoor or outdoor BBQ sessions. Please note that these services require a telephone reservation at least five days in advance. The garden also serves as a beautiful photo spot, featuring artistic rose displays created by professional gardening planners, making it a perfect place to capture lasting memories.
Hebinohana is situated in a lush, natural area of Motomiya City. It is conveniently located near the Adatara Service Area (downbound) on the Tohoku Expressway, which is about a 10-minute drive or a short distance away. This makes it an easy addition to a sightseeing route through Fukushima's natural landscapes. Additionally, a "One-Coin Taxi" service operates from Motomiya Station, providing a convenient public transport option for travelers.
As the garden includes walking paths around hills and ponds, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Please dress appropriately for the season. Regarding payment, please carry cash if you intend to use the BBQ services or other food-related options. While the official website offers information in multiple languages, please check the availability of English-speaking staff on-site. For BBQ reservations, please call ahead at least 5 days in advance.
