The Hatsu-Daishi Daruma Ichiba is a traditional event held every year on January 3rd at Kitain Temple in Kawagoe City, Saitama Prefecture. This date marks the auspicious day of 'Ganza Daishi' (the Great Master of Warding off Evil). Ganza Daishi is an epithet for Jiei Daishi, who is believed to have entered Nirvana on the 3rd day of the New Year. Consequently, this day is revered as 'Hatsu-Daishi' (the First Great Master) to welcome the new year. Since the early Edo period, as Kitain grew in popularity for prayers regarding good fortune, protection from evil, and safety, the temple grounds have been filled with the famous Daruma Market, where dolls symbolizing 'Nana Korobi Yaoki' (falling seven times and getting up eight) are sold.

The event is rooted in Esoteric Buddhist practices and the deep-seated faith in spiritual salvation. Jiei Daishi, who practiced rigorous training on Mount Hiei, is revered as a figure who brought healing and miracles to the people. Even in modern households, it is common to display 'Kakudaishi' amulets on doorways during the New Year to invite protection.
