The Hatsu-Daishi Daruma Ichiba is a traditional event held every year on January 3rd at Kitain Temple in Kawagoe City, Saitama Prefecture. This date marks the auspicious day of 'Ganza Daishi' (the Great Master of Warding off Evil). Ganza Daishi is an epithet for Jiei Daishi, who is believed to have entered Nirvana on the 3rd day of the New Year. Consequently, this day is revered as 'Hatsu-Daishi' (the First Great Master) to welcome the new year. Since the early Edo period, as Kitain grew in popularity for prayers regarding good fortune, protection from evil, and safety, the temple grounds have been filled with the famous Daruma Market, where dolls symbolizing 'Nana Korobi Yaoki' (falling seven times and getting up eight) are sold.
The event is rooted in Esoteric Buddhist practices and the deep-seated faith in spiritual salvation. Jiei Daishi, who practiced rigorous training on Mount Hiei, is revered as a figure who brought healing and miracles to the people. The devotion to the Great Master—often seen as an incarnation of Kannon or Fudo Myoo—remains strong today. Even in modern households, it is common to display 'Kakudaishi' amulets on doorways during the New Year to invite protection. The tradition of combining Goma (fire ritual) prayers with the vibrant Daruma market has been firmly established through centuries of history.
Visitors will find numerous stalls displaying Daruma dolls in a breathtaking array of colors, including red, white, pink, yellow, blue, and green. The designs range from traditional, classic expressions to luxurious versions adorned with gold, floral patterns, and geometric motifs. These dolls are cherished lucky charms representing the spirit of perseverance. Additionally, you can enjoy other traditional festival items like traditional masks, offering a true glimpse into the authentic atmosphere of a Japanese seasonal market.
This is a highly exclusive seasonal event held only on January 3rd. The market typically operates from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Please be aware that the area becomes extremely crowded, especially in the morning as people combine their market visits with New Year prayers. Note that traffic restrictions are often implemented in the surrounding area on this day, so please plan your arrival carefully.

You can witness the sale of colorful Daruma and various lucky charms, providing a wonderful opportunity to observe Japanese New Year culture firsthand. The event is characterized by the unique coexistence of solemn religious rituals, such as Goma fire prayers, and the lively, communal atmosphere of the market.
