Hashikura-ji Temple is a prestigious Shingon Buddhist temple located on Mount Hashikura in Miyoshi City, Tokushima Prefecture. Often referred to as the inner sanctuary of Konpira, it has been a center of deep devotion for centuries. Accessible via a scenic ropeway from the foot of the mountain, the temple offers a serene and quiet space far removed from daily life, surrounded by breathtaking natural landscapes. The spiritual vitality of the site is maintained through daily rituals, including sacred Goma fire prayers performed at specific times in the morning and evening.
According to legend, in the year 828 (early Heian period), when the monk Kobo Daishi (Kukai) ascended this mountain, the deity Konpira Daigongen appeared to him. The deity gave an oracle stating, "Whoever lifts the chopsticks, I shall surely save them." Following this, Kobo Daishi himself carved the deity's image and established the temple complex. Historically, the temple's role as the inner sanctuary of Konpira strengthened during the late Edo period, drawing many pilgrims. Local folklore also tells the "Tengu's Chopstick Legend," involving a Tengu (mountain spirit) that supposedly carried chopsticks during a festival.
The temple grounds are dotted with structures that evoke a profound sense of history. One of the most iconic views is the approach to the temple, where visitors pass through the Nio-mon gate and cross the striking red Saya-bashi bridge. Another significant feature is the "Hannya Shingyo Shokeidan" stone steps leading to the main hall, where each step is inscribed with characters from the Heart Sutra, symbolizing the path of ascetic training. Visitors can witness the solemn Goma fire ritual at the Goma-den at 06:30 and 18:00 daily. Special ceremonies, such as the Hashi-kuyo on August 4th and the Hoshi-kuyo during the Setsubun season, are also held alongside architecture designated as Important Cultural Properties.
Hashikura-ji is renowned for its changing seasonal beauty. In spring, the grounds are adorned with delicate cherry blossoms, while autumn brings a vibrant display of colorful maple leaves. To experience the most profound spiritual atmosphere, we recommend visiting during the morning (06:30) or evening (18:00) Goma fire rituals, when the silence of the mountains enhances the sense of peace. The Hoshi-kuyo ceremony held late at night during Setsubun is also a rare opportunity to witness traditional ritualistic practices.
