Hashigui-iwa is a remarkable collection of rock pillars located in Kushimoto Town, Wakayama Prefecture. More than 40 pillars of varying sizes are lined up in a single row, stretching approximately 850 meters along the coastline. The name 'Hashigui-iwa' literally means 'bridge pile rocks,' as the pillars resemble the wooden piles used to support a bridge. This striking landscape, sculpted by the relentless power of marine erosion, creates a stunning contrast against the deep blue of the sea and the vast sky.
The site is deeply connected to the legends of Kobo Daishi (Kukai), a highly revered figure in Japanese Buddhism. According to local folklore, Kobo Daishi engaged in a wager with an 'Amano-jaku' (a mischievous spirit or demon), and it is said that these rocks were erected in a single night as a result of that legendary event. This blend of natural phenomenon and spiritual storytelling adds a profound layer of cultural depth to the site.
