Lake Haruna is a stunning caldera lake formed by the eruption of Mt. Haruna. The landscape is characterized by the majestic presence of Mt. Haruna (Haruna Fuji) to the east, surrounded by lush mountain ranges. During the Taisho era, this area was a favorite of cultural figures, including the renowned painter Yumeji Takehisa, who used the scenery as inspiration for his art and literature. Throughout the seasons, the lake is adorned with cherry blossoms, azaleas, and particularly beautiful autumn foliage. The lakeside area is a harmonious blend of nature and culture, featuring various hot spring facilities, restaurants, and leisure spots.
The area has a long history of spiritual significance, including the "Haruna-ko" rituals. Historically, people would visit Haruna Shrine south of the lake to perform rain-making rituals by bringing back sacred spring water to their fields. From the Meiji era onward, as the nearby Ikaho Onsen developed, many intellectuals and artists gathered here. Famous figures such as Yumeji Takehisa, Akiko Yosano, and Kyoshi Takahama expressed the beauty of Lake Haruna through their poetry and paintings, cementing its reputation as a place of profound artistic value rather than just a natural landmark.
The greatest draw of Lake Haruna is the breathtaking view of Mt. Haruna rising above the lake. Visitors can also immerse themselves in the world of the artists who loved this land at the "Yumeji Takehisa Atelier." The natural environment is rich with flowing spring water and seasonal blooms. Another highlight is the Funaota Falls, where water cascades down a 60-meter cliff, offering a spectacular display of natural geological beauty.
Activity is most frequent from April to November. Spring (April–May) brings cherry blossoms and azaleas, while early summer features beautiful flowers like the Deutzia. Summer is ideal for water activities and boating. Autumn (October–November) is a peak season for seeing the surrounding mountains turn vibrant colors, which reflect beautifully on the lake surface. In winter (December–March), while some leisure facilities close, the area offers a serene, snowy landscape and occasional ice-related activities. We recommend visiting during daylight hours for boating and visiting at dusk for the best views of Mt. Haruna.
A variety of leisure activities are available on the lake. You can enjoy boating in various shapes, such as duck-shaped or ladybug-shaped boats, or even coffee cup-shaped boats. A unique local experience is the
