Harimazaka Cherry Blossom Avenue is a beautiful, 460-meter-long path of cherry trees located along the 'Circular Route No. 3' in Koishikawa, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo. A standout feature is its immense width of approximately 40 meters, with the central median meticulously designed to function like a public park. The promenade is dotted with sculptures and benches, creating an open, airy space that offers a sense of relief from the urban environment. In spring, about 120 Yoshino cherry trees bloom in full, creating a magnificent pink tunnel. It is a beloved spot for both locals and tourists seeking a moment of tranquility amidst the city.
The name 'Harimazaka' is derived from the former residence of the feudal lord, Matsudaira Harimasa, who once lived in this vicinity. The road's layout is rooted in the reconstruction plans following the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake and post-war urban development. It was designed as part of a larger vision to integrate wide roads with green belts in Tokyo's urban planning. In 1960, as part of a movement to 'fill the area with flowers,' the central median was transformed into a garden, with local residents cooperating to plant the Yoshino cherry trees. Around 1995, the layout was further refined to include a pedestrian path utilizing the central lanes, resulting in the scenic landscape seen today.
The greatest attraction is the continuous line of Yoshino cherry trees along the central median. The blossom tunnel created by the 120 trees provides a powerful sense of spring's arrival. Along the path, several sculptures and benches are placed, allowing visitors to sit and admire the view. Due to the natural undulations of the slope, the scenery changes beautifully as you move through the area. Interestingly, the northeastern side of the path has a more traditional Japanese aesthetic, while the southwestern side features a more Western-style design, offering two distinct atmospheres for your stroll.
The best time to visit is from late March to early April, during the peak blooming season of the Yoshino cherry trees. During this period, the entire area is bathed in a vibrant pink hue. While the daytime offers bright and beautiful views, visiting during the evening or twilight is also highly recommended. The silhouettes of the cherry trees against the streetlights create a calm and romantic atmosphere. While the greenery is beautiful year-round, visiting during the blossom season is the ultimate experience.
The primary activity here is a leisurely stroll. The wide, spacious promenade is perfect for walking and taking in the scenery. We recommend sitting on a bench to enjoy a book or simply contemplate the changing seasons. You can also enjoy a cultural stroll by observing the various sculptures and art pieces integrated into the urban design.
