Happo Pond is a natural alpine pond located at an altitude of approximately 2,060m in the Happo-one area of Hakuba Village, Nagano Prefecture. The pond was formed by the accumulation of meltwater and rainwater in a depression created by sediment pushed out by snow. Situated within the Chubu Sangaku National Park, it is surrounded by the majestic peaks of the Northern Alps, including the iconic Hakuba Sanzan. The sight of the surrounding mountains reflected perfectly on the water's surface like a mirror amidst the crystal-clear air is the most iconic and breathtaking view of this region.
The area is located along the ridge path leading toward Mt. Karamatsu. The name "Happo-one" (Eight Directions Ridge) comes from the historical context of the ridges extending in all directions from the Hakuba mountain range. The area around Happo Pond is influenced by serpentinite, a unique geological formation, which has created a distinct ecosystem where alpine plants grow at lower altitudes than usual. This precious natural environment is strictly protected as a significant part of Nagano's natural heritage.
The greatest charm is the "water mirror" effect seen on clear days. The way the Hakuba Sanzan peaks are reflected in the still water of the pond captivates all who visit. Additionally, the area is home to approximately 347 species of alpine plants, offering a different landscape each season. The unique vegetation patterns caused by the altitude and geology create a striking contrast between alpine flora and low-growing shrubs. If you are lucky, you might even encounter wildlife such as the Japanese Serow or the Rock Ptarmigan, which are protected species.
The primary season for visiting Happo Pond is from May to September, when the snow melts and plants begin to bloom. During the summer, the abundance of alpine flowers and the bright daylight provide the best opportunities to observe the vivid reflections of the Hakuba peaks. While the scenery is beautiful with lingering snow or in the crisp morning air, weather can change rapidly at this altitude. For the most spectacular views, aim for clear, sunny days with high visibility.
Visitors can experience Japan's high-altitude nature through hiking and trekking. There are two main ways to reach the pond: the left-hand route (clockwise) features well-maintained wooden paths with a relatively gentle slope, perfect for enjoying the scenery. The right-hand route (counter-clockwise) is a more intense trekking experience involving more rugged terrain and rocky sections. Both routes offer incredible opportunities for photography and observing the unique alpine-plant ecosystems.
Happo Pond is located on the trail leading from the Hakuba Happo-one Ski Resort and the Hakuba Information Center. The surrounding area includes high-altitude points like Kurobishi-daira, where various viewpoints offer panoramic views of the Japan Alps. On exceptionally clear days, it is even possible to catch a glimpse of Mt. Fuji from the vicinity of the second stone cairn.
Since the pond is at an altitude of 2,060m, temperatures are significantly lower than at the base. Regardless of the season, you must carry warm clothing and waterproof gear (rain jacket). Sturdy hiking boots and functional outdoor clothing are essential for safety.
There are no shops or facilities near the pond or along the hiking trails. Therefore, no cash or credit cards can be used on-site. Please ensure you bring all necessary supplies (water, snacks, etc.) from the base.
While English signage on the mountain trails is limited, the Hakuba Information Center at the foot of the mountain provides information in English to assist international visitors.
The hiking trails are open to the public without prior reservation. However, weather conditions can change instantly. Always check the latest local weather reports before heading out to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
