It is said to have once been the residence of Okubo Hizaemon, a high-ranking official under Tokugawa Ieyasu. The history of this site is profound, originating as the residence of the 17th-century samurai Okubo Hizaemon. Happo-en offers a different-looking landscape in every season. The most popular times to visit are during the cherry blossom season in spring and the autumn foliage season. Please note that the tea house operates on a specific schedule, typically on Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays from 11:00 to 15:00. The way light interacts with the pond and garden changes beautifully depending on the time of day.
Beyond simple strolls, visitors can enjoy a formal matcha experience at the tea house. By checking the tea house's operating days, you can enjoy traditional tea while surrounded by the stunning garden scenery. The expansive grounds are also frequently used for events and exhibitions, providing an excellent environment to observe traditional Japanese architectural styles and garden structures.
Happo-en is located near the Shirokanedai area, adjacent to the popular Shinagawa and Tennozu districts. It serves as a peaceful historical sanctuary nestled amidst the modern residential and commercial developments of central Tokyo.
For walking through the gardens, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. When visiting the tea house, please follow the specific rules of the facility. Payment can be made via Cash, Visa, MasterCard, AMEX, or UnionPay. Note that the tea house is primarily open on Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays (11:00–15:00), so please plan ahead. While some English support is available, please observe traditional Japanese etiquette during your visit.
