Hanazono Ajisaien is a lush botanical garden situated at an altitude of approximately 1,000 meters in Katsuragi, Wakayama Prefecture. As early summer approaches, the garden transforms into a vibrant display of colors with its famous hydrangeas and peonies. With about 3,000 hydrangea plants and 1,000 peonies blooming amidst rich greenery, the garden offers a breathtaking contrast of colors that provides visitors with a sense of profound healing and awe. Located along the stunning Koya Ryujin Skyline, it is a special destination where you can escape the daily grind and feel the breath of nature.
The garden features a diverse range of plants that change their expressions with the seasons. The greatest draw is the approximately 3,000 hydrangeas that adorn the garden during the rainy season. The sight of hydrangeas in shades of blue, purple, and white blooming along the slopes is incredibly photogenic. Additionally, in mid-to-late May, about 1,000 peonies reach their peak bloom. The harmony between the deep green of the forest and the vivid colors of the flowers makes this place truly worthy of the name 'Celestial Garden.'

Different plants offer different charms depending on the season. The peony season is from mid-May to late May, allowing you to experience the first hints of early summer. The hydrangea season, however, peaks from mid-July to mid-August. The hydrangeas look particularly stunning during the rainy season when the air is moist and fresh. We recommend visiting during bright daylight hours to capture the vibrant colors under the sun, or during the gentle afternoon hours to enjoy a relaxing stroll in the cool breeze.
Visitors can enjoy forest bathing while walking through the crisp, high-altitude air. Walking amidst the natural colors is an excellent way to refresh both mind and body. Nearby, you can also visit the 'Hanazono Production Direct Sales Office' to purchase fresh, local agricultural products. Stopping by during your drive to taste the seasonal flavors of the region is one of the many charms of this visit.

The garden is located along the Koya Ryujin Skyline, a famous scenic driving route. The surrounding area is dotted with historical sites like Mount Koya (Koyasan). There are also camping facilities nearby, such as 'Hanazono BASE,' where you can enjoy staying overnight in nature. It is a very convenient stop whether you are heading toward a destination or exploring the history of the Koya region.
Because the garden is located at an altitude of 1,000m, the temperature can be significantly lower than in the lowlands. Please bring a light jacket or layers that are easy to put on and take off. As the terrain is natural and uneven, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. If you plan to use the local direct sales shop, please carry cash for smooth transactions. To protect the environment, please follow local etiquette: do not damage the plants and ensure you take all your trash home with you.
