Hanakari Valley is a scenic destination located in Takahagi City, Ibaraki Prefecture, where a rich natural environment remains beautifully preserved. Formed by the mountainous terrain of the Taga Mountains and the deep valley carved by the Hanakari River, this area allows visitors to enjoy the ever-changing expressions of nature throughout the seasons. In autumn, the surrounding trees turn into brilliant shades of red and gold, creating a stunning landscape alongside the flowing river. It is a popular spot for hikers and tourists seeking to escape the bustle of daily life and immerse themselves in the tranquility of nature.
This region has been carefully protected as a natural park for many years. It was designated as a Northern Ibaraki Prefectural Natural Park in 1953. Over time, through various changes in name and scope, it has become part of the Hanakari Prefectural Natural Park, preserving its precious ecosystem and scenery. The area also holds historical depth, with names of landmarks evolving over time—for example, the area once known as 'Fudo Falls' is now known as 'Otome Falls.' The region maintains a strong focus on environmental conservation while welcoming visitors to enjoy its natural heritage.

The greatest charm of Hanakari Valley lies in the deep, clear stream flowing through the valley, surrounded by dramatic cliffs. The area known as 'Namerigafuchi' and the beautiful waterfalls are among the top highlights. Additionally, the nearby Hanakari Dam provides a scenic backdrop that complements the natural landscape. Every visit offers new discoveries, whether it is the seasonal flora or the unique geological formations. Walking along the hiking trails allows you to observe how the scenery shifts beautifully depending on your perspective.
The best times to visit Hanakari Valley are May, when the fresh greenery is beautiful, and the peak autumn foliage season from late October to November. During the autumn season, the entire valley is enveloped in fiery colors, making it a highly popular spot for photography enthusiasts. In the summer, the sound of the cool stream makes it a wonderful place for a refreshing stroll to escape the heat. We recommend visiting between late morning and afternoon, as the sunlight enhances the clarity of the water and the vividness of the plant life.

The primary activity here is hiking through nature. The well-maintained trails allow you to reconnect with the environment while refreshing your mind. Many travelers visit specifically for photography, capturing the dramatic seasonal color changes. While the area is excellent for nature observation, please note that these are walking paths designed for enjoying nature rather than intense mountain climbing.
There are several other natural attractions in the vicinity. You can explore the landscapes around the Mizunuma Dam or the Hanakari Dam, often noted for their beautiful views. If you venture a bit further, you can visit the beautiful coastlines of Isahama Beach or Sea-viewing areas. Combining a visit to the valley with the nearby hot spring facilities or the coastal scenery of Takahagi will make for a truly fulfilling trip.

Comfortable walking shoes and appropriate clothing are essential for exploring the valley. Since temperatures can change, especially during autumn or spring, layering is highly recommended.
