Hanamigata Cemetery is a large-scale, natural-form cemetery located in Kotesura, Tottori Prefecture, spreading along the coastline. It is extremely rare to find a cemetery of this scale concentrated along a single stretch of coast, making it one of the largest of its kind in Western Japan. The sight of approximately 20,000 graves standing across a 350-meter stretch along the shore leaves a profound and unique impression on all who visit.
The site is home to the 'Akasaki Tower,' a structure approximately 3 meters tall that dates back to the end of the Kamakura period. This tower possesses a very rare architectural style found only near the Akasaki area, serving as an important relic that tells the history of the region. Furthermore, there are local accounts that the famous author Lafcadio Hearn once visited this area and remarked on its unique, evocative atmosphere. It is a rare cultural landscape where nature and history are deeply intertwined.
The greatest charm lies in the seamless integration of the cemetery with the coastline. Visitors can gaze upon the vast rows of gravestones while listening to the rhythmic sound of the waves. The Akasaki Tower, with its immense historical value, is a must-see feature unique to this location. During the daytime, the contrast between the blue sea and the cemetery stones is beautiful, allowing for a clear observation of the historical structures under the bright sunlight.

Since the site is located along the coast, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. It is also wise to bring a hat to protect against the sun and dress according to the season.
Photography of the landscape is permitted; however, please maintain respect and decorum given the sacred nature of the cemetery.
