Hanamaki Onsenkyo is a collective name for the hot spring areas located in the western part of Hanamaki City, Iwate Prefecture. It consists of 12 distinct hot spring groups emerging along the Daikawa and Toyosawa rivers, often referred to as the 'Hanamaki 12 Springs.' This area offers a wide variety of accommodation styles, including traditional single-family inns (isshin-yado), classic medicinal bath houses (toji-ba), and modern large-scale hotels. As part of the Hanamaki Onsenkyo Prefectural Natural Park, visitors can immerse themselves in a breathtaking natural environment while exploring different types of hot springs.
The region has been blessed with abundant hot spring water since ancient times. Historically, the 'Hanamaki Railway' operated to connect Hanamaki Station on the Tohoku Main Line to famous hot spring destinations like Hanamaki Onsen and Shin Nabeya, serving as a vital transport link for travelers. The upper reaches of the Toyosawa River area, where many springs emerge, is sometimes referred to as the 'Hanamaki Minami Onsen Gorge' due to its unique topographical features.

Hanamaki Onsenkyo is characterized by the unique properties of its various springs. Major areas include Hanamaki Onsen, Hanamaki Kita Onsen, Dai Onsen, Kanaya Onsen, and Towa Onsen. Other notable areas along the Toyosawa River include Matsukura Onsen, Shidaira Onsen, Watari Onsen, Osawa Onsen, Yamanokami Onsen, Nameda Onsen, and Shin Nabeya Onsen. A key feature is the diversity of experiences: from traditional medicinal baths focused on healing to luxury stays in large hotels.
Each facility within the Onsenkyo offers a different atmosphere depending on the season and time of day. Because the area is a designated natural park, you can enjoy the changing beauty of the four seasons while bathing. However, as operating hours and services vary significantly between facilities, it is highly recommended to check the specific details of each establishment before your visit.
In Hanamaki Onsenkyo, you can experience hot spring culture through various styles of stay. Whether it is the deep, traditional experience of a medicinal bath house or the comfort of a large hotel, the way you enjoy the water changes with the location. Wandering through the different springs while surrounded by the natural environments of the Daikawa and Toyosawa rivers is a quintessential way to spend your time here.
The area surrounding the hot spring village is filled with lush nature. The area along the Toyosawa River is known as the Hanamaki Minami Onsen Gorge, where you can enjoy the hot springs alongside the dramatic scenery of the canyon. The entire region is integrated into the Hanamaki Onsenkyo Prefectural Natural Park, where the hot spring culture and the natural landscape exist in perfect harmony.
