Lake Hamana is a large lake spanning approximately 15km east-to-west and 6km north-to-south, located between Hamamatsu City and Kosai City in western Shizuoka Prefecture. The most distinctive feature of this lake is that it is a 'brackish water lake,' where seawater from the Pacific Ocean flows in through a specific opening. This unique mix of salt and fresh water has created a incredibly diverse ecosystem, supporting 401 species of fish, 59 species of crustaceans, and 84 species of mollusks.
Historically, the lake was originally a freshwater lake. However, following the breakup of a sandbar during the own-yo earthquake in 1498, it transformed into the brackish water lake seen today. This geological change created nutrient-rich waters, leading to the development of the region as a major producer of high-quality seafood such as eel, clams, seaweed, and oysters. Today, it is a beloved destination for enjoying natural landscapes alongside hot springs, leisure activities, and waterfront culture.
The history of Lake Hamana stretches back tens of thousands of years to the marine transgression period. Through various geological shifts, the lake has developed its current complex shape with many inlets. The area also preserves traces of historical checkpoints; for instance, during the era when the Tokaido-road was in full use, the river flowing near the lake was known as the 'Hamana River' and served as a vital transportation hub.
The 1498 earthquake was a turning point that significantly shaped the region's history. By connecting the lake to the open sea, it created the fertile fishing grounds that exist today. This natural evolution is the very foundation of the local food culture and the thriving industries that define the area's identity.

There are many diverse spots around Lake Hamana where nature and culture blend seamlessly. In the southern part, Bentenjima features a striking vermilion torii gate standing in the water, serving as an iconic symbol of the lake's landscape. On the northern shore, the Kanzanji Kannon Temple offers a spiritual experience, and the surrounding area is well-developed for tourism.
Leisure facilities are abundant, including Hamana Lake Garden Park, the Palpal amusement park, and the Music Box Museum, making it a popular destination for families and groups. Additionally, well-maintained cycling roads allow visitors to enjoy a relaxing ride while taking in the beautiful lakeside views.
Lake Hamana offers different charms throughout the year. From spring to summer, the area is lively with water sports and seasonal activities like clam digging. The changing flora and temperatures ensure that the scenery is always evolving with the seasons.
Time-wise, the calm waters during early morning or the golden hues of sunset provide particularly breathtaking views. Please note that the operating hours of sightseeing and hot spring facilities may change depending on the season or weather conditions.

Visitors can enjoy a wide range of activities that connect them with nature. Popular activities include water sports like boating and sailing, as well as cycling around the lake's perimeter. A major highlight is the culinary experience; tasting local specialties like eel, clams, and seaweed is a must.
For relaxation, you can soak in the Kanzanji Onsen hot springs while enjoying the view of the lake. Whether you are looking for a resort-style stay or a day trip to explore local landmarks, Lake Hamana offers something for every traveler.
The area around the lake is dotted with useful tourist hubs. The Shonai Peninsula on the eastern shore features various hot spring facilities and sightseeing spots. To the west, historical sites like the Nii-sekisho (Nii Checkpoint) ruins offer a route for history enthusiasts.
Access is easy by car via the Tomei Expressway (using the Hamana Lake Service Area) or via the bridges like the Hama-na Dai Bridge. For those using public transport, several stations on the JR Tokaido Main Line (such as Bentenjima, Mapan, and Nii stations) are within walking distance of various lakeside parks and attractions.

Preparation is key to enjoying your visit depending on your chosen activity. If you plan on cycling or walking, comfortable shoes and breathable clothing are highly recommended.
