The Shiramiike Embankment (commonly known as Shirami Dam) is a gravity-type concrete and stone dam located in Taketa City, Oita Prefecture. Designated as a National Important Cultural Property in 1999, it is often hailed as 'Japan's most beautiful dam.' The name 'Shirami' (White Water) perfectly describes the sight of water cascading down the face of the dam, looking much like a flowing white silk garment. Having also received the Good Design Award in 2011, the structure is celebrated as a modern heritage site that harmoniously blends functional engineering with exquisite aesthetic beauty.
This embankment was constructed to resolve water shortages for the Fuji Oi Road area in Taketa and Ogata districts. Construction began in April 1934 and was completed in March 1938. The design and supervision were led by Yasuo Ono, an agricultural civil engineer of Oita Prefecture at the time. To address the challenges of the fragile volcanic geology, an advanced design was implemented to mitigate the impact of falling water. The site is also widely recognized as an iconic local landscape, having been featured in television commercials for the famous Oita-based shochu brand, 'Nikaido.'
The greatest attraction is the mesmerizing sight of the water cascading over the dam. The way the water spreads out like a white cloth is truly captivating. The design includes clever topographical adaptations at both ends: the right bank features a curved channel called 'Musha-gaeshi,' while the left bank features a stepped channel. These elements are designed to control the force of the water, creating a controlled, artistic spectacle. The heavy, historical texture of the stone surface further enhances the sense of grandeur.
The scenery changes significantly depending on the season and water volume. During periods of high water levels, the white cascades are dynamic and powerful. However, during low water periods, the water may not flow over the dam at all. Please note that a scheduled stoppage of water overflow is planned from November 27, 2025, to mid-June 2026. We highly recommend checking the water status before your visit to ensure you can witness the full spectacle.
Observing the unique harmony between man-made structure and nature is an experience in itself. From either the left or right banks, you can gaze at the water falling like a white robe. Amidst the tranquil environment, listening to the sound of the water while admiring a National Important Cultural Property offers a special moment of serenity away from daily life.
The area around Shirami Dam is dotted with spots that symbolize the rich nature of Taketa City. Notable nearby sites include the Shirami Falls and the 'Kuta Spring Water' (part of the Taketa Spring Water Group), known for its pure water. These locations are essential elements of the 'Famous Water and Hot Springs' culture that Oita Prefecture proudly maintains.
As this is an outdoor facility, please wear clothing suitable for changing weather. Most visitors arrive by car, and parking is available on both the left bank (Shigida Parking Lot 1 & 2) and the right bank (Tsugikura Parking Lot). While basic facilities are available, please respect the natural environment. This is a public facility with no admission fee or reservation required, but please be mindful that the visual experience depends entirely on the current water levels.
