The Hakusan Shirakawa-go White Road is a fully paved, toll-based scenic route spanning 33.3 km through the heart of Hakusan National Park, connecting Ishikawa and Gifu prefectures. Driving through a dynamic landscape with elevations ranging from 500m to 1,450m, visitors can experience the rich, untouched nature at the foot of Mount Hakusan up close. The road's greatest charm lies in its seasonal transformations: the fresh greenery of spring, the refreshing air of summer, the brilliant colors of autumn, and the serene snowy landscapes (outside of the operational period). Each season offers a unique and moving experience.
This road was developed as a vital route to smoothly connect the Ishikawa and Gifu sides while preserving the exquisite scenery of Hakusan National Park. Mount Hakusan has been a site of spiritual worship since ancient times, and the surrounding area is deeply rooted in a culture of coexistence with nature. The White Road facilitates easier access to historic areas such as Shirakawa-go and Hida Takayama, contributing significantly to the regional tourism and cultural preservation.
There are several captivating spots to stop along the drive. A standout is the 'Shirakawa-go Observatory,' which offers a panoramic view of the World Heritage-listed Shirakawa-go village; depending on the season, you may witness a dramatic 'sea of clouds' (unkai) drifting below. The 'Sanpoyawa Parking Lot' provides sweeping views of the majestic mountain ranges, while the nearby 'Jayaen Park' allows visitors to explore primeval beech forests and beautiful waterfalls. Additionally, the Ishikawa side features seven waterfalls with abundant water, perfect for feeling the raw energy of nature.
The landscape changes beautifully with the seasons. From June to early July, the contrast between the fresh greenery and the remaining snow on the Hakusan and Northern Alps is spectacular. From late September to early November, a stunning gradient of autumn colors unfolds across the different elevations. Notably, from late September to late October, an 'Autumn Morning Time' is available, allowing entry from 7:00 AM. This early morning period is the best time to witness the mystical and ethereal sea of clouds.
The primary activity is a scenic drive via private car or rental car. You can enjoy the mountain resort atmosphere by opening your windows to breathe in the crisp, clean air. Near the Jayaen area, you can also enjoy walking along forest paths to observe waterfalls and local flora. For relaxation, 'Oyani no Yu' offers hot spring footbaths and outdoor baths where you can soak while gazing at the Ubaga-taki waterfall. Taking a break at rest areas to enjoy local specialties or a quiet tea time is another delightful way to experience the area.
Near the end of the White Road lies the World Heritage site of Shirakawa-go, famous for its traditional Gassho-zukuri farmhouses. The road also provides smooth access to the Takayama area in Gifu and the Kaga Onsen hot spring region in Ishikawa. Combining this drive with a visit to the historic streets of Takayama or the heritage villages of Shirakawa-go will create a truly enriched travel itinerary.
As this is a mountainous area with abundant nature, please prepare for rapid weather changes. Clothing that allows for layering is highly recommended due to the temperature differences at different altitudes. For the protection of the forest and safety, the use of drones (flying, filming, or operating) is strictly prohibited throughout the White Road. Please respect the parking areas and rest stops, and follow local etiquette to help preserve the natural environment.
