Hakusan Park is a historic park located in Chuo-ku, Niigata City, offering a profound sense of tradition. Its origins date back to the Meiji era (1873) following a government decree, and it is situated adjacent to the sacred Hakusan Shrine, the protector of Niigata. The park is characterized by a Dutch-style stroll garden design, incorporating ponds, artificial hills, and a diverse array of flowers and trees. In 1998, the park area was expanded and integrated with cultural facilities such as the Niigata City Performing Arts Center 'Ryutopia,' creating a complex space that features six elevated gardens and walkways.
The history of this park is deeply intertwined with Japan's modernization during the early Meiji period. It is recognized as one of the earliest public parks in Japan, established via a government decree in 1873. While preserving the historical landscapes of Niigata, the park also serves as a hub for local culture and arts, surrounded by various cultural institutions. Visitors can find several historical monuments and relics scattered throughout the grounds, such as the memorial for Yoshihito Meiwa, the monument for Shikibu Takeuchi, and Niigata's oldest stone lantern, all of which tell the story of the region's past.
