The Abashiri Prison Museum is an open-air historical museum that preserves and showcases the relocated and restored buildings of the former Abashiri Prison, which has been deeply connected to the history of Abashiri City since the Meiji era. The facility offers a profound look into the harsh realities of the past through its numerous exhibits and architectural structures. Within its vast grounds, you can wander through scattered wooden historical buildings and learn about history while being surrounded by the natural beauty of Hokkaido.
During the Meiji era, Abashiri Prison played a crucial role as a center for the development of Hokkaido. The prison is widely known for its history of many prisoners performing grueling labor, such as road construction, under extremely harsh conditions. This facility does more than just display artifacts; it serves to convey the social structures of the time and the lives of the people who supported the development of Hokkaido, even in an era when this region was considered the 'edge of the earth.'
The museum features immersive experiences designed to engage your senses, such as video exhibits themed around the construction of the central roads. For instance, in the Prison History Hall, a three-sided projection system allows you to feel as if you have traveled back a century to a grueling road construction site. Furthermore, many of the preserved wooden buildings are based on designs from over 100 years ago, making them highly valuable from an architectural standpoint due to their high ceilings, wooden truss structures, and designs that utilize natural light.
As the museum features a large site with many outdoor exhibits, visitors can enjoy the tour regardless of the weather. The summer season (approximately May to September) is an ideal time to explore the outdoor structures alongside Hokkaido's vibrant nature. Additionally, some exhibition areas are designed to let in natural light, making the daytime an excellent time to appreciate the textures and details of the architecture. A visit typically takes about 1 hour for a quick tour, or about 2 hours if you wish to explore the details thoroughly.
At the 'Prison Cafeteria' within the facility, you can try 'Prison Food,' which is recreated based on the actual recipes used in modern prisons. This allows for a deeper understanding of the historical background through taste. The museum also hosts seasonal events, such as workshops and farm experiences, offering various programs beyond simple observation.
The museum is located in a beautiful natural environment near Abashiri City. It is approximately a 20-minute drive or taxi ride from Memanbetsu Airport, and can be accessed via bus or taxi from JR Abashori Station. There are many other spots nearby to enjoy Hokkaido's nature, making it easy to plan a comprehensive sightseeing itinerary.
Since the exhibits are spread across a large area, the tour involves a lot of walking. As many exhibits are outdoors, please bring clothing suitable for the weather. Because the facility preserves precious historical wooden buildings, please follow all rules to protect the cultural assets.
