Hakuma Valley, located in Usuki City, Oita Prefecture, was designated as a scenic beauty site in 1978. Situated on a tributary of the Usuki River, the valley is characterized by a harmonious landscape of lush greenery and historic stone bridges. The foundation of this landscape was laid in 1731 (the 3rd year of the Tenpo era) by Hashimoto Shuma-no-suke and Shimizu Zen-shichi, who developed the paths, constructed the eight stone bridges, and planted seasonal trees. Today, it is celebrated as one of Usuki's most iconic locations for viewing autumn colors.
The history of this area reaches back to the Edo period. The current landscape was shaped by the vision of Hashimoto Shuma-no-suke and Shimizu Zen-shichi, who were deeply moved by the natural beauty of the valley. They constructed the paths and the eight stone bridges, while also planting various trees such as maple and sacred gardenia to ensure beauty throughout the seasons. Furthermore, the area holds spiritual significance, with local legends connecting the natural landscape to the worship of the deity Toyoke-hime-no-kami, blending nature with ancient faith.
The most captivating feature of Hakuma Valley is the collection of eight stone bridges scattered throughout the area. A unique way to enjoy the valley is to walk the path while counting each bridge as you cross the stream. The seasonal variety of the trees also adds to the charm, especially in autumn when the vibrant colors of the leaves create a stunning contrast against the stone bridges and the flowing water.
While the valley offers different charms throughout the year, it is most famous during the autumn season. The 'Hakuma Valley Momiji Festival' is held around late November each year, marking the peak of the autumn colors. Visiting during the daytime is highly recommended, as the bright sunlight beautifully highlights the contrast between the colorful foliage and the ancient stone bridges.
