Hakuba Cortina Ski Resort is a premier ski destination located in Otari Village, Kitaazumi District, Nagano Prefecture, renowned for its exceptional 100% natural powder snow. The name 'Cortina' was inspired by the topography and environment of the Dolomites in Italy, following a geological survey. The resort is directly adjacent to Hotel Green Plaza Hakuba, offering seamless access for guests. Beyond winter skiing and snowboarding, the resort transforms during the green season, offering activities such as camping, trekking, and various seasonal programs, making it a year-round destination for outdoor enthusiasts.
The area has been a popular destination for skiers since around 1935, originally opening as the 'Ikenoda Ski Resort' in 1950. The resort underwent significant development in the 1970s, evolving into the current Hakuba Cortina Ski Resort. In 1989, the opening of Hotel Green Plaza Hakuba solidified the area as a fully integrated resort. Furthermore, the resort shares lift passes with the neighboring Hakuba Norikura Onsen Ski Resort, positioning it as a major hub within the broader Hakuba mountain range.
Hakuba Cortina offers a diverse range of courses tailored to all skill levels. Beginners and families can enjoy the wide, gentle slopes of the 'Ikenoda' area or practice carving on the 'Ipponmatsu' course. For advanced riders, the resort features challenging terrain like the 'Hiedayama' and 'Ita-hiraoine' courses, which offer some of the best steepness and powder in the Hakuba area. In winter, the 'Snow Play Park' offers unique experiences like snow vehicle rides, perfect for family recreation. During the summer, the 'Cortina Auto Campground' opens, allowing visitors to enjoy the breathtaking starry skies and natural landscapes.
The peak season is winter (December to March) when many visitors arrive seeking high-quality powder snow. Night skiing is also available, allowing you to experience the thrill of riding under illuminated lights. In the summer (around July to September), the focus shifts to trekking, paddle golf, and nature-based activities. The campground is a highlight during this time, offering a perfect environment to observe the starry sky in the high-altitude plateau.
A variety of seasonal programs are available. In winter, the snow vehicle experience is highly popular. The resort also features a renovated sauna facility within the hotel, including an auto-laylu system for men and a rock salt bath for women, providing the perfect way to relax after a day on the slopes. In summer, visitors can engage with nature through adventure-style programs, camping, trekking, and even natural vegetable gardening.
As a key landmark in the Hakuba area, the resort allows for extended skiing experiences via shared lift passes with the adjacent Hakuba Norikura Onsen Ski Resort. The surrounding region is also home to numerous accommodation facilities and restaurants, making it easy to enjoy a comprehensive Hakuba vacation.
